Ear Training

Ear Training

Ear Training is hugely important for your skills as a musician. If you're looking to improve and hone your ability to hear and notate rhythms and pitches, for writing your own songs, for greater skills in a rehearsal, or as reinforcement for a college ear training class, I can help you! We will work to strengthen your ability to hear different patterns and excerpts of rhythm and pitch and to be able to notate them on manuscript paper. Using a sight singing manual, you will be assigned passages to sight-read and practice while I am there to guide you and give you the tools for effective listening independently on your own. You will become familiar with different intervals and intervallic patterns, as well as different rhythmic patterns - all these patterns in some form become melody lines, which we interpret as music. I have my Bachelor's degree in Vocal Performance from the Ithaca College School of Music, where I graduated magna cum laude. I took several classes in Ear Training while at Ithaca as a requirement of the degree. I also have a few years experience tutoring young children, teens, and adults in ear training. I would love to help you improve your listening and notating skills!
Music Theory

Music Theory

Music Theory tutoring sessions are geared toward students who wish to improve and hone their ability to read, understand, and analyze notated music of all kinds - for application in a high school music class, a college music class, for private vocal or instrumental lessons, or for your own personal enjoyment of seeking to learn and understand music theory. We will work to strengthen your ability to recognize and understand different musical patterns and excerpts, as well as key & time signatures, triad and chord structures, musical notes and rhythms within bass and treble clefs (and other clefs if applicable), intervals, and different musical forms, among other topics. While at Ithaca I was required to take a variety of Music Theory courses as a part of my BM music degree, where I gained strong skills in notating and analyzing music. I also have a few years experience tutoring young children, teens, and adults in music theory. If you're seeking Music Theory help, I'm your gal!
Sight Singing

Sight Singing

Sight Singing is a necessary skill for those interested in the vocal or instrumental arts - whether you're in music school, a choral rehearsal, auditioning for a church gig or a show, or working with others in an ensemble. Sight singing allows you to read/sing a musical line/excerpt at sight without having prior knowledge of the pattern/excerpt. We will work to strengthen your ability to recognize different melodic patterns and varieties of rhythmic divisions and patterns so that you can easily piece together a musical line/excerpt at sight. As a singer myself for many years, I have been in situations where I have had to sight-sing, and I know how tricky or nerve-wracking it can be! I can give you tools and exercises to help you nail that audition or skills test, or feel comfortable in a rehearsal. My training in music school gave me a solid foundation in sight-singing, and I'd love share my skills with you!
Voice (Music)

Voice (Music)

Voice lessons are an exciting and life-changing experience. Voice lessons with me are not just about "the voice" but about your whole self (mind, body and soul) making music and sharing your gifts with the world. I would love to help you explore, improve, and hone your singing and musical performance and audition/preparation abilities. We will work to strengthen and optimize your vocal production, using effective tools and exercises. These exercises range from learning how to stand and posture to promote beautiful singing, how to open the throat, how to achieve a low, connected breath, how to create a clear, free, and easy tone, and how to sing a beautiful legato line, connected and blended between the registers of your voice. Since the art of singing is so personal and unique, we will also work together to achieve physical, aural, and emotional presence to bring to the singing body, mind, and soul. Different vocal styles can be explored, from Classical to Musical Theatre to Pop Music. Rehabilitative speech work can also be incorporated according to the needs of the student. I have been singing and teaching voice for years, in my private studio and also in community music school settings. I have worked with students of all ages with voices of different types, and am able to adapt my lessons individually to each student's needs. It would be my pleasure to teach you how to sing and make beautiful music!
