Hi! My name is Alexis and I am a rising junior attending Macaulay Honors College at The City College of New York. My studies are focused in advertising and English.
My experience in writing runs deep. Throughout high school, I was the editor-in-chief of our school’s literary and art magazine Fragments. As editor-in-chief, I was in charge of designing the magazine, writing for the publication, and managing the staff.
Currently, I am a member of the Brooklyn Poets Society. The second Monday of every month, I attend the writing workshop and open mic where I speak and share my recent work on stage.
Also, I am a writing consultant and tutor at The City College Writing Center. There, I conduct one-on-one tutoring sessions of one hour each. I work with undergraduate and graduate students and help them with their essays, personal statements, cover letters, creative writing, etc.
I love working as a tutor not only because I am a person who wishes to help my peers discover the power and importance of writing, but also because it is a true pleasure to get to know my students and be a part of their journeys as writers.
Tutoring in English is not easy. Many, especially those who aren't lovers of English, find the subject daunting and excluding. What I like to do is share my love for language and in doing so, explain how accessible and including English is for all who care to know it and understand it. Learning English is more about understanding the self than anything else. Plus, it's fun!
