I am a graduate of Cornell University, where I graduated Cum Laude and with Distinction in Research. I have extensive experience tutoring students in essay writing, particularly for competitive private boarding school and college admissions. Recent college-applying students I have worked with received admission to Johns Hopkins University, the University of Michigan, and Macaulay Honors College, among others. Recent boarding school applicants received admission to Phillips Academy Andover, Groton School, St. Andrew's School, Hackley School, and Episcopal High School.
My experience with writing extends beyond admissions essays. I am a published researcher in bioethics and have written for academic audiences across medicine, ethics, and the social sciences. Through this work, I have learned how to develop an argument, organize complex ideas, and communicate them clearly to a reader. These are the same skills I emphasize when working with students. Rather than simply editing a student's essay, I work with them to identify what they want to say, understand why it matters, and develop the structure and language to communicate it effectively. I want the final essay to remain unmistakably the student's own.
I also received a 1550 on the SAT and a 35 on the ACT and am comfortable helping students prepare for standardized exams. My approach emphasizes understanding why an answer is correct rather than memorizing shortcuts. I work with students to identify patterns in the questions they miss, determine whether those mistakes come from gaps in content knowledge, reasoning, timing, or test-taking strategy, and develop an individualized approach from there.
