About Jamil

Bio

I find the exact step a student is missing and fix it. That is the whole method, and it is why parents in my reviews keep saying their kid finally gets it after one or two sessions. I have tutored math for 20 years and spent five of those years as a full time high school math teacher. In that time 97% of my AP Computer Science Principles students and 90% of my AP Calculus students scored a 4 or 5, my Regents pass rate was above 95%, my SAT students regularly score 780 to 800 on the math...

I find the exact step a student is missing and fix it. That is the whole method, and it is why parents in my reviews keep saying their kid finally gets it after one or two sessions. I have tutored math for 20 years and spent five of those years as a full time high school math teacher. In that time 97% of my AP Computer Science Principles students and 90% of my AP Calculus students scored a 4 or 5, my Regents pass rate was above 95%, my SAT students regularly score 780 to 800 on the math section, and many of my competition students earned AMC Distinction or qualified for the AIME.

I teach prealgebra, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, precalculus, calculus and statistics, including AP Calculus and AP Statistics, along with SAT, ACT and SHSAT math and AMC prep. I also hold 18 graduate credits in computer science and tutor AP Computer Science, Java and Python. My master’s degree is in Mathematics Education from Teachers College, Columbia University, and I have worked with students from middle school through college.

I have a lot of experience with students who have ADHD and work very well with them. Sessions are built around short, clear steps with quick wins, I keep the pace moving, and I check for understanding constantly instead of lecturing, so a student who struggles to sit through a class stays engaged and leaves with something they can actually do.

Every new student starts with a short diagnostic so I know exactly where the gaps are, and then we work on those rather than a generic curriculum. Parents get a plain update after each session on what we covered and what comes next. I teach online with a shared whiteboard, which works just like sitting at the same table, and I am used to working parents who need flexible scheduling.

Calculus

Calculus

I have over 15 years of experience tutoring calculus and advanced math, working with students from high school through college. I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Applied Mathematics and a Master’s degree in Math Education, and I’ve helped many students build a strong conceptual understanding of limits, derivatives, integrals, and applications of calculus. My approach emphasizes clarity, problem-solving strategies, and connecting prerequisite skills to new concepts so students feel confident and prepared for college-level STEM coursework.
Prealgebra

Prealgebra

I have over 15 years of experience helping students build strong foundations in prealgebra and middle school math. I focus on number sense, fractions, decimals, ratios, expressions, and problem-solving strategies, making sure students truly understand the “why” behind each concept. I work especially well with middle school students who may feel anxious about math, using clear explanations, patience, and step-by-step guidance to build confidence and consistency.
Probability

Probability

I have a degree in applied mathematics with an emphasis is probability and statistics.
Statistics

Statistics

have a strong background in probability and statistics, supported by a Bachelor’s degree in Applied Mathematics and a Master’s degree in Math Education. I’ve worked with advanced undergraduates and graduate students on probability, mathematical statistics, inference, and proof-based reasoning. My focus is on helping students develop rigorous problem-solving strategies—how to break down unfamiliar problems, reason through assumptions, and construct clear solution paths—rather than relying on memorization. This approach is especially effective for high-stakes exams and graduate-level coursework.

Patient, Knowledgeable, and Supportive

Jamil has been great with my daughter. He’s patient, explains things in a way she can understand, and takes the time to work through areas where she struggles. I also really appreciate the feedback he gives after each lesson so we know how she’s doing and what she needs to work on.

Excellent Math Specialist

Mr. Jamil quickly identified my child’s gaps in understanding calculus after just one class. He developed a clear, solid plan to address those issues and rebuild the fundamentals first. I would highly recommend him to any student struggling with calculus.

Very pleasant and knowledgeable

Jamil was so patent, he reviewed everything that I ask him to. Over and over, he didn't complain or show any sort of annoyance. I have so much clarity now, thanks to Jamil.

Jamil really connected with my son in Math!.

After the 1st lesson with Jamil my son (11th grade) was so excited about Alge/Trig that he couldn't wait to take his test! His score increased by 30 pts!! So far only two lessons due to our own scheduling conflicts. We intend to stay with him since the results are immediate! He is a good listener and is very professional in communicating his assessment to the parent. He also responds to his texts in a prompt manner and for me that's a huge plus! Son is a Jr. in a Pvt. school.
