At the start of my journey to a B.A. in Psychology, I began my education at Finger Lakes Community College in Rochester, NY. During this time, I worked in their writing center for a year as a reading and essay composition tutor for students between the ages of 17 to 22 individually. All students were asked to read assignments and their work aloud. This enabled them to listen to their own mistakes and valuable information they missed from the assignment’s directions. Additionally, I had them explore how assignments and prompts related to their own lives. For example, I helped an individual to place themselves in a character’s shoes when a question asked why the character performed certain actions during the chapter of a story. Furthermore, I assisted in decoding prompts into smaller steps when folks felt disorganized. At the end of the experience, both students and colleagues emphasized the increase in grades and confidence.
Upon conclusion of my time at Finger Lakes, I ventured to Nazareth University of Rochester NY to obtain my B.A. in Psychology. Here, I volunteered as a tutor for middle and high school students for the city’s district between the ages of 14 to 18. Most of them were on the verge of failing and being left a year behind their peers. Since I collaborated with them one on one in a large gymnasium, organization and time management became a huge priority. Many folks were assisted with basic vocabulary by using mnemonics and filling in sentences when given worksheets containing blanks. I asked about their thought processes and comprehension of various texts before discussing sentence structure. I fixed grammatical issues and unpacked grading scales. Finally, I showed them how to locate evidence for assignments such as the Document Based Question (DBQ) and writing APA citations properly. I was appreciated for my time and dedication, and I was invited to tutor the following year.
