I am certified in New York State in Spanish, Grades 7-12, Special Education, and Elementary Education. I have eleven years of classroom teaching experience, including three years as a Spanish Teacher, three years as a Learning Disabilities Teacher, and one year as an ESL Teacher.
I currently work as a Migrant Specialist. In this capacity, I work with many students who do not have English as their primary language. As a consequnce, school can be very difficult for them. I work very hard to try and help them succeed in their studies.

We appreciate Charlie's thoughtful approach to working with our son. Our son is bright kid with significant reading and writing challenges. Charlie took the time to get to know our son and is always actively working on strategies that support his learning needs and build and maintain his self confidence too. Charlie is always on time. Listens to my issues and was great help with my son on his summer reading and history. He helped him understanding reading concepts and how to organize his work.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I took 30 hours of Graduate level courses in Learning Disabilities as an undergraduate at the University of Oregon and became certified in the State of Oregon as a Learning Disabilities teacher. I also spent 3 months as a student teacher in a classroom with special education students. In addition, I took 24 graduate hours in Sppecial Education at Western Oregon State College.
I spent two years as a classroom teacher in a self-contained elementary Learning Disabilities classroom (I had several students who had a diagnosis of ADD) and one year as a classroom teacher in a self contained junior high school Learning Disabilities classroom.

While pursuing certification in the field of Learning Disabilities, there was an emphasis on the importance of the development of study skills for students with disabilities. During my three years as a classroom Learning Disabilities teacher, I spent a significant amount of time making sure that my students were well organized and had an awareness of how to study effectively. I helped them to develop study skills that took advantage of their different learning styles. I currently work with several students that need assistance with their study skills in order to pass their academic subjects.

In my MPA program, there also was an emphasis on the use of vocabulary. In my eleven years of teaching experience, I was required to teach and develop my student's familiarity with grade level vocabulary. I also have helped several high school students learn vocabulary in preparation for the SAT.
