Are you looking for an experienced, compassionate tutor who understands the human side of learning as well as the academic side of it? Is someone in your family struggling to learn concepts and/or applications due to teaching that doesn't match their learning style, and a personalized approach would help? Or are you an adult trying to pass a standardized test, including the teacher certification tests, and need help from someone with a proven success record?
If the answer to any of these questions is "yes," let me help you to your own shining success stories.
I am a certified teacher in New York state, as well as a teacher trainer. My experience includes tutoring children, including those with learning differences, and young adults for around ten years. My students consistently make progress and succeed measurably with my help. My location is in upper Westchester County, but I can travel to you or to another meeting point. I offer online tutoring as well.
When tutoring in math, I use the Singapore approach, which has been proven to be most effective in teaching number sense and problem solving. It helps students develop critical thinking skills. When I tutor, I don't tell students what to think, but I lead them to be able to think for themselves.
Subjects I tutor:
• Any elementary/middle school subject
• Any English subject through college, including ESL
• Essay writing
• Standardized test success, including SAT, LAST, and teacher tests
• A variety of computer subjects
• Hebrew language
Some testimonials from other students and their families:
"Susan is an intelligent, bright and willing tutor. I have found her to be a great resource in my education. We have been working together for almost three years now, and I have seen how much working with her has helped me to improve in the subjects we work on together. I have also witnessed first hand the many different ways she can work a subject. If one way does not work, she can and is willing to try a different approach that best works for you." Roxanne, 17-year-old current student

Susan M is the perfect tutor for my middle school son. I was searching for a tutor who had good reviews working with students who could address his Dyslexic challenges. Susan was perfect, I thought I was hiring a summer tutor for math, what I and my son discovered was a tutor whom has been with us for 1 year now, addressing all subjects especially vocabulary, special projects, test preparation, midterms and final studying techniques and even taught him to manage his homework assignments. My son has even seen his grades improve!! Her patient professional style enables my son to understand the methodology and concepts to the material he is learning. Her vast understanding of many subjects is helping him prepare now this summer for High School- which we plan to keep her for the next 4 years!! Thank you Susan
Susan has been an excellent tutor, she teach with some methods easy for the children to understand. She has a lot of patient, and she is able to teach different subjects at the elementary grades level. Has a lot of discipline with her job and the children who she teach. I will recommend her highly to any student who need help in their grade.
I found Susan to be VERY informative about every aspect of the computer. She was very patient with me as I know next to nothing as how to navigate myself around this darn machine. But after a few hours I feel more comfortable and knowledgeable and I'm looking forward to our next lesson.
Susan seemed professional and full of great ideas on how to work with my son. He really liked her and we are looking forward to continuing! Thanks Susan.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I earned a Masters Degree in Elementary Education 1-6 in 2003 from Lesley University. In subsequent years, I have taught school grades K-6, all subjects. I hold a professional license to teach grades 1-6 in New York State.
I am extremely well versed in how computers work. I have been using personal computers since the late 1970s, and I studied engineering in college. I also did a great deal of masters level coursework in technology in education.
In addition to having taught classes in technology to schoolchildren, I have been a paid computer consultant in the professional world, including work as a network manager at MIT for several years before changing careers to teaching. I am good at the user level of computers (applications) as well as troubleshooting, hardware, peripherals, and some level of programming/alterations of systems. I enjoy passing on my knowledge about these areas.
Hebrew is my second language; I began learning it formally in first grade. I have lived in Israel and became fluent in the language there, even taking college courses in Hebrew alongside Israeli students and teaching underprivileged children in an after-school program. More recently, I have taught Hebrew in several contexts, including a special needs class, sixth and seventh grade Hebrew in a religious school, and private tutoring.
I have been using Macintosh computers since the first ones and through the present. I was also a Macintosh support professional at MIT and independently before going full time into teaching. There is very little I can't teach or troubleshoot on a Mac.
I have extensive experience beginning in high school working with students with special needs, from physical needs to autistic spectrum disorders. I enjoy helping students learn no matter what their learning differences may be, and approaching any subject through a variety of modalities to find what will work for the student.
I have designed a number of websites that are active today. I have a website design portfolio available for viewing upon request. This includes websites designed by hand using HTML and PHP, websites based on Wordpress, and a complex e-commerce website based on oscommerce that I modified a great deal. I have also used Dreamweaver and Rapidweaver to facilitate WYSIWYG design, though I am comfortable going in and tweaking the code if there is a problem.
In addition to jobs in which I was paid to design and launch sites, I am an active webmaster of several of my own sites, as well as those of two non-profits. I have taught web design to children and young adults, and I enjoy doing so.
