About Rabbi Chana

Bio

My name is Rabbi Chana!

I wear two hats — I have a deep passion for teaching Hebrew Bible, and I’m also a rabbi, so I also have a broad range of Jewish knowledge.

My name is Rabbi Chana!

I wear two hats — I have a deep passion for teaching Hebrew Bible, and I’m also a rabbi, so I also have a broad range of Jewish knowledge.

In teaching Bible, my main emphasis is on the use of modern approaches to the biblical text (which I initially learned via the Department of Hebrew Bible at the Jewish Theological Seminary), which I find make learning and teaching the biblical text illuminating and exciting. And the fact that I’m a rabbi means I can help relate this to current Jewish ideas and ways of living.

I excel at teaching adults (both Jewish and non-Jewish), and I’ve worked extensively with the pre-B’nai Mitzvah age group. I have taught adult education (one-on-one or in small groups) in Hebrew Bible and on various Jewish topics, and have 15 years’ experience at Jewish summer camps as well. I have a BA (Phi Beta Kappa) in Religion from Swarthmore College, and an MA and Rabbinic Ordination from JTS (Conservative).

If you are interested in learning about Judaism generally, besides the wealth of knowledge I’ve acquired, I’m also good at explaining how the various aspects of Judaism are connected.

And if you would like to embark on a voyage in Hebrew Bible that will enrich your understanding (and, occasionally, blow your mind!), please get in touch with me.

Thanks!

Bible Studies

At JTS (Jewish Theological Seminary — Conservative) I learned a number of critical and literary tools that modern scholars use to decipher the meaning of text in the many literary genres within the corpus of the Hebrew Bible. In the course of those years (and in succeeding years of study, partly in a Ph.D. program, also at JTS, and on my own) I have come to the conclusion that this type of study lends credibility to our understanding, but also has a great deal to offer to Jewish culture and religion. I have more than 15 years’ experience teaching this fascinating subject, and my approach is adaptable to various stages in a person’s life.
Religion

Religion

My BA was in Religion from Swarthmore College, and I completed an MA (Judaic Studies) and received Rabbinic Ordination from the Jewish Theological Seminary. I also worked on a Ph.D. In Hebrew Bible (also at JTS) until life interfered with my plans. Since then, I have taught Judaism in many different contexts: Online classes, at Jewish summer camps, synagogue Torah studies, talks given on various Jewish topics, and adult education (both formal and informal). I am particularly good (or so I’m told) at explaining the connections between seemingly disconnected elements of religion, and how disparate details relate to the coherent whole we call “Judaism”. Also, while I’m a Conservative rabbi, I’m comfortable working with (and have experience with) those whose tradition is not the same as mine, including non-Jews, of course. I’m also comfortable with complete beginners at any age.
