My name is John! I graduated with honors degrees in statistics and pure mathematics from UC Riverside, and recently completed my Master's degree in statistics at Duke. I have experience tutoring math throughout high school, and during the last two years of my undergraduate studies, as well as five semesters of experience working as a TA and running labs in grad school, for which I have been nominated by my students for departmental TA awards.
I am well-versed in all areas of math up to the high school level, and most areas of university-level math as well, with particular strengths in statistics, probability, precalculus, calculus, and algebra 2. I have recently developed a strong interest in contest math, and am capable of helping students prepare for the AMC 8, AMC 10/12, and counting/probability portions of the AIME.
I have a very strong passion for both learning and teaching math, and enjoy the exercise of making mathematical concepts both interesting and understandable to others. My approach is centered around the idea of breaking down the overarching concepts and motivations behind math, so that my students can understand why the concepts exist and how they can be applied to solve problems we are faced with. That being said, I treat every student as a unique individual; no one approach can work for everyone, and I put substantial effort into finding the best way to help each student I work with.
