After college, I worked for 3 years teaching preschool and Pre-K. I love reading and writing and have taught both children and adults how to read and write. The adults I taught was when I was a substance abuse counselor. One of the things I have done with the 5th-grade class is called popcorn reading. This is where one student reads one paragraph or more and then when they're done they call on someone else. I found that the students were more apt to want to read when they got to call on each other instead of me. Also, I believe if a person finds what they are reading they won't learn to read because they are really not focused. For example, the same 5th-grade class had Basel Reader's, instead, I asked their teacher if I could use an actual book. I found one I thought they'd enjoy because they could relate to it, and they really did enjoy it and everyone wanted to read. Teaching reading and writing have been done in a formal setting. I know a lot about Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) as I am on the high end of the spectrum. Due to this, I have done a lot of research on the topic. I have not taught this subject, but I have worked with people who are on the spectrum. I once for was at my friend's and she asked me if I could watch her twins, one who is on the spectrum. It was challenging but I enjoyed doing it. I found I could relate to him more than most people. This was an informal setting at his home.
I started doing theatre in 1995 in high school so I have a lot of experience along with what I learned in college. I do not act but have filled many roles on the tech side of theatre including props, moving sets, curtains, assistant stage manager, stage manager, production assistant, painting (not designing) sets and lights and sound (running them not designing them). Theatre has mostly done in a formal setting. There was

Bible Studies

I became a Christian in 1989 at age 9, and I have been studying God's word ever since. In 2010, I received the Citation Award from an international church club called AWANA. In order to win it, you have to memorize over 400 Bible verses. On Sundays, we have Life Group (Sunday School some call it) where I lead one of the ladies groups, I lead a Biblically based weight-loss support group, as well as attending other Bible Study groups when we have them.

Theater

Theater

I do not know the acting part of the theatre, however, I know the technical side very well. I have a minor in American Musical Theatre and having done theatre since the 10th grade of high school, I now have 22 years of experience of and on (mostly on) doing theatre. I have done the behind the scenes part of theatre including props, those items the actors use on the sets. The most challenging was creating a giant newspaper for Baby June to burst through in "Gypsy", moving sets including a 40 second scene change in "The Secret Garden", painting sets, (but not designing them), I have been both assistant stage manager and stage manager (with the most recent production I stage managed for was being a 2008 production of "The Odd Couple (Female Version)." I have been a production assistant during my high school years. My favorite, however, is running lights, and sound (not setting them up, just running them). I did take an acting class in college, I have a great memory for lines as well as music (from musicals). In high school, I won a plaque in my drama club my senior year that was basically an all-around plaque (it says Number One Booster and All-Girl Friday).

AWESOME! AWESOME! AWESOME!

Carolyn is AWESOME if you can't tell by the title yet. She works with both our boys who are currently in the 6th grade and they love her. The other day my son came home from school with a big smile on his face and you could tell he was happy about something. He told us the story of how his teacher asked everyone in class if they knew what a predicate was and nobody raised their hand but him then the teacher asked if anyone else knew what a conjunction was and again his hand shot straight in the air and was the only one. His teacher told him "Great job" and it made our son's day. This might not seem like a huge thing to everything but to our son it showed him that all the hard work he has been putting in with Carolyn during tutoring is paying off. Our son struggles tremendously at school and also doubts himself. Well, I should say used to doubt himself! Carolyn has changed his life for the better. She encourages him and motivates him to try his best. We are so grateful to have found someone so passionate at what she does. She gets straight to work at every lesson and keeps them focused and on task. There is no playing around just learning. She adjusts her lessons to fit whenever they need more help on a certain subject and she is always prepared. She has made such an immense impact in both of our boys' education and has taught them to believe in themselves and given them the tools to succeed. She is highly intelligent and knows the subject matter extremely well. From one parent to another if you're reading this get her as your tutor it will be the best decision you make for your children.

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

Carolyn is very resourceful, keeps the momentum going by switching tools and giving my kid opportunities to explore different ways to demonstrate understanding. Overall very happy with the classes she has had so far!

Passionate and dedicated!

Carolyn struck me immediately with how much she cares about deaf culture and to not only teach ASL, but teach about the rest of it all as well. She's personable, funny, and most important of all an incredible teacher. Even in the short period I've known her she has helped me immensely to learn ASL to communicate with my best friend, and I'm grateful for that.

very patient!!

Caroline was an amazing reading tutor for my 4-year-old son. She showed incredible patience, especially considering his young age, and created a comfortable and encouraging learning environment. Her calm demeanor and understanding made my son feel confident as he worked through new challenges. I really appreciated how she took the time to tailor the lessons to his pace and interests, making reading fun for him. We saw noticeable improvement in his skills, and he always looked forward to their sessions. I highly recommend Caroline for anyone seeking a patient, kind, and effective tutor.

First session for writing

Carolyn worked with my two children on written language. Both are 10. I was impressed with her thoroughness and detailed analysis of the results of her informal assessments. She was able to provide several details of my children’s writing skills that focused on spelling and conventions. She met with me virtually for 20 min after the sessions to summarize the results. Then she wrote a detailed summary of the results, highlighting their strengths and weaknesses. No doubt she will continue to work with my children! I like her style and open communication!

Super teacher

My daughter (1st grade this year) loves her lessons (reading) with Carolyn. Our daughter is very active and even sitting in one place for 30 minutes was difficult for her, but with Carolyn she somehow seems to be able to handle it and she says she loves her lessons. The lesson summaries are very detailed and we appreciate her efforts in putting everything together.

Experienced and Understanding.

Carolyn has worked very well with my son who has difficulty with language. She is quite experienced in teaching english. She showed a lot of patience and understanding with my son. She got his attention and kept him engaged. She sent the copies of worksheets that she has worked with him which was helpful.
