I'm Thomas, and I would love to help you achieve your writing goals. As a writer and teacher, I see my role as helping students become independent thinkers who can clearly communicate complex ideas. I am currently a Ph.D. candidate in English at the University of Pennsylvania, and I received my Bachelor's degree from New York University. I have taught writing and American literature courses at Penn, as well as Montclair State University and the City College of New York. I have published essays in peer-reviewed academic journals, and I am currently writing a book-length manuscript that charts a cultural history of the work ethic in American literature.

While pursuing my scholarship, I have also tutored high school and college students in English and writing. I greatly enjoy working with students one-on-one to craft essays, complete assignments, and meet academic goals, as tutoring allows me to make a direct impact to support students' achievement. I am eager to help students develop strategies for success in conducting research, writing essays, and crafting personal statements. Across this work, my focus is helping students gain the confidence and skills they need to produce the best writing for any assignment or application.

I place a high value on the insights that students have about how they are best able to learn, and I work to create a tailored plan for each student. In our first session, we will devote some time to talking about your previous learning experiences and your goals, and we will begin to lay out the steps necessary for you to achieve your goals. My aim is for all students to feel confident that their aspirations are within reach. To schedule a lesson or with any questions, please feel free to reach out. I hope to play a part in your success and development as a writer!

I have taught first-year writing courses at three colleges, and I have received training in the teaching of writing from the Modern Language Association. As a teacher and tutor, I have helped students develop strong essays of various types, including research essays, close reading essays, personal statements, and application essays. In my own academic work, I write about American literature, and I have published essays drawn from my dissertation in peer-reviewed journals.
