With more than 850 hours of online tutoring experience at two companies, I bring professionalism and empathy to interactions with students of all ages. I enjoy tutoring students because I was once on the other side of the table! As an undergraduate physics major at Cornell University, I received supportive, concept-based, and empathetic tutoring that greatly increased my self-confidence and mastery of the course material. In my tutoring sessions, I use many techniques which I learned from my tutors, and my #1 goal is to empathize with the student and make them feel valued despite their academic struggles. My tutoring sessions focus on helping the student understand the "why" -- "why is equation X appropriate and not equation Y?". From my own experience, this approach allows students to fully understand the course material and apply it in a variety of settings, from academia to careers and internships. My previous students have consistently given me a 4.5 - 5/5 star rating, proof that my approach is a valuable one.

I graduated in 2019 from Cornell University with a double-major in Physics and German Studies. I also have a Masters degree in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of Michigan. I currently live in the Ithaca, NY, area.

As a tutor, I specialize in a variety of STEM and non-STEM subjects, including Calculus, German, Physics, Materials Science/Metallurgy, MATLAB, study skills/organization, proofreading, and resume/cover letter reviews. Contact me with questions about how I can help you in one of these or other subjects!

Approved Subjects

Calculus

Calculus

For nearly 7 years, I have used calculus on a near daily basis: as a high school AP calculus student, in every college-level physics class at Cornell, and, most recently, while tutoring AP Calc AB/BC students. I can help you with all levels of calculus, from AP to college-level Calculus 3.
German

German

Certified CEFR Level C2 (highest possible) in all areas of the German language (reading, writing, speaking, listening) by the Goethe Institute of New York. Completed a 1-year immersion exchange to Germany via the Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange (CBYX) scholarship when I was just 16. Was a 3-year resident of the German section of the Cornell University Language House, a language immersion dorm. Received the Cornell University Goethe Prize twice for the best undergraduate essay written in German. I regularly watch German news and documentaries to keep my language skills sharp.
MATLAB

MATLAB

Since taking my first college-level MATLAB class 7 years ago, I have used MATLAB during multiple full-time internships as well as in my graduate research and coursework. I know how it feels to start coding with no experience, and I can help both new and experienced coders gain proficiency in MATLAB.
Physics

Physics

Graduated from Cornell University with a double major in Physics and German Studies. Completed a Master's Degree in Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Michigan, where I regularly used concepts related to Solid-State Physics. At Cornell, my favorite classes included Quantum Mechanics (both theory and applications) and Solid State Physics. I have tutored numerous Physics students at both the college and Advanced Placement (AP) level.
Proofreading

Proofreading

Throughout college and graduate school, I have proofread numerous pieces of scientific and academic writing, both in English and German. I also worked as a resume/cover letter proofreader for several months.

Great tutor!!!

Juliane is an amazing, competent, and patient teacher and an extremely friendly person who created a safe environment for learning and clarifying doubts! She helped me a lot with a subject no one else seemed to understand well enough and taught me more in an hour than 3 months’ worth of classes did. She was well prepared, answered all my questions and provided examples that literally opened my eyes to concepts I was struggling with for a long time. I would definitely recommend Juliane to people who struggle with any physics problem. I am grateful for our lesson and am hoping and looking forward to more!

Excellent tutor

Juliane was very adept at uncovering gaps in my knowledge and explaining unintuitive concepts regarding reciprocal space, such as Bragg planes and Brillioun zones.

Amazing German Tutor - Very Patient and Worked Around My Schedule

I came to Juliane to complete my GE Foreign Language Requirement needed to graduate with my art history degree. She was very knowledgeable, patient, and tailored our lessons to fit my needs as an art history student, geared more toward Reading and Writing in German. I would highly recommend her German tutoring for anyone going outside the conventional language requirement process at their University or even to just brush up on German basics. Without her, I don't know where I would be!

Great start!

She got right to work and started with the basics which is just what i needed! She had me do examples on my own and work through some with me!

Knowledgable and Patient

Julianne is very patient. She teaches by having you, the student try and learn as you work, making corrections and suggestions along the way. The best way to learn is by doing, this is how Julianne teaches.

Very Good Tutor!

Julianne helped me out a lot with my college physics class. The best thing about her tutoring style is she has you try things first before jumping in. So for a problem that you need help with she will first have you talk about what you know and then help you on you should go from there. This is very helpful for understanding things fairly quickly. Also she is a very reasonable tutor in general. Highly recommend!

Exceptional tutor

Juliane is extremely knowledgeable, friendly and full of great analogies to help me understand complex concepts. I really enjoy every lesson, I wish they were longer.

A very experienced and patient tutor

She helped me with some Baruch physics problems regarding mechanics and buoyancy. She was very good at articulating complex concepts and giving understandable examples. I would definitely recommend her to anyone else needing help
