Hi! I'm Mary, a tenured, New York State certified English teacher with seven years of experience teaching middle and high school students. I hold a master’s degree in education and have taught English in grades 7, 8, 9, and 11. I have also spent six summers teaching English through Cornell University’s Upward Bound program for high school students.

Hi! I'm Mary, a tenured, New York State certified English teacher with seven years of experience teaching middle and high school students. I hold a master’s degree in education and have taught English in grades 7, 8, 9, and 11. I have also spent six summers teaching English through Cornell University’s Upward Bound program for high school students.

My approach to tutoring begins with getting to know the student in front of me—their strengths, challenges, interests, and goals. I have worked with students with a wide range of abilities and learning needs and have learned to adapt my approach to best support each student. One of my favorite things about teaching is watching something that once felt difficult start to click for a student. I want students to feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and building resilience to work through challenges. I believe one of the most powerful things I can give my students is the confidence that they can succeed when they find the approach that works for them.

I can support students with reading comprehension, literary analysis, essay writing, vocabulary, grammar, and English coursework, as well as reading and writing across subject areas. I especially enjoy helping students take something that feels overwhelming and break it down, helping them see that progress comes from focusing on the process one step at a time. I can help students develop strategies for breaking down unfamiliar words and reading challenging texts, as well as organizing their thinking and communicating their ideas effectively in writing.

I hope to help students develop skills and strategies they can apply independently in the future. Whether a student needs help with an assignment, ongoing support, or wants to strengthen their skills and get ahead, I will adapt our work to their goals. I enjoy helping students craft stories, poems, and other pieces of writing using techniques such as figurative language, characterization, description, and dialogue, while also developing the overall structure and tone of their work. My goal is to help students develop these writing techniques while finding their own unique voice.
