I focused on studying the Humanities- History, Languages, and Literature- throughout high school (5s on APs), college (Georgetown), and graduate school (Columbia). Before becoming a classroom teacher of both Social Studies and English Language Arts in 2007, I worked as a professional historian. I currently hold professional teacher certification in NYS for grades 5-12. For almost 20 years, I have enjoyed teaching students of all abilities, both in the classroom and one-on-one, ranging from Johns Hopkins CTY wonder kids to equally amazing special education and ELL push-in students in Regents classes.

96% of my past students' Social Studies and English Language Arts grades rose to A within 3 months. Most of my NYS Regents Global History and Geography, American History and Government, and English Language Arts students have scored above an 82, usually in the 90s. 100% of my AP European History, APUSH, AP World History, English Literature, and English Language and Composition students in recent years have passed and earned a 4 or 5. 100% of my IB English A and most of my IB HOA students have also earned top scores.

In addition, I have simultaneously worked in college admissions since 1995, first as a screening and scoring interviewer for Georgetown, next as a researcher at a prominent firm, and then as an essay coach. In 2021, I took the IECA Summer Training Institute. Now, I provide guidance in everything from middle school summer planning, to college list building, and from brainstorming personal statements to maximizing supplemental essays for the most selective colleges.

Teens love my caring attitude, sincere rapport, and goals. I increase students’ self confidence; maximize their grades, test scores, college matches, and college acceptances; and help them to become self-sufficient.

I love to help students to thrive in history, not just survive. Whether you want to understand more of the content (whether analysis of dense history textbooks, primary sources written in older forms of English, or dueling secondary sources; pattern identification; and or memorization and recall) or need help learning how to write a history (DBQ, LEQ, IB HOA, NYS Regents, college) essay or research paper (especially the thesis, analysis, proof, and argumentation), I can help you to maximize your grades and scores. In high school, I did so well in APUSH, in my U.S. History research paper, and in AP European History that both Georgetown and the U.S. Congressional leadership gave me offers. After working for Congress while earning my undergraduate degree via many graduate history courses, I worked as a professional historian for U.Cambridge, a national organization, and William & Mary. I switched to teaching U.S. and World History to grades 5-12 in 2007, obtained a graduate degree at Columbia in 2009, and earned my professional level teaching certification a few years later. Since then, 95% of my students, both in the classroom and one-to-one, have raised their Social Studies grades to As or A-s within 2-3 months. 100% of my recent APUSH students have passed the AP United States History Exam, and 92% of them earned a 5. 100% of my IB History students practiced all 5 History of the Americas paper formats (1, 2, 3, HI, EE) and went on to earn top scores. Now it is your turn! Success in NYS Regents U.S. History, APUSH, IB HOA, and college American History courses requires: strong reading, study, and analytical skills; comparisons across time and space; identification and proving of causes of changes; and insightful essay writing. I will teach you ways to study actively, and thus more successfully, and how to improve your note-taking, so that you can better master content understanding. I will incorporate storytelling, visual tasks, and authentic questions, to help you make connections across time and space. You wil

My Georgetown undergraduate history thesis discussed a lesser known European History topic. Simultaneously, I worked on policy research for the U.S. Congress and took many advanced European History courses. After graduation, I worked as a professional historian at U.Cambridge, a national organization, and William & Mary. Then, I went to Columbia for more graduate history coursework. Since 2009, I have designed college Western Civilizations/ Western Traditions courses, taught secondary History classes, and tutored AP European History students. Now it is your turn to understand better historical content and patterns, both inside Europe and while Europe ruled the entire world, so that you can raise your grades, pass the AP European History exam (even score a 4 or 5), and excel in your college Western Civilization / Western Traditions requirements. Personal Statements

Personal Statements

My first exposure to college admissions occurred when I successfully wrote my own personal statement and supplemental essays for undergraduate studies at Georgetown. When I graduated, the Georgetown Undergraduate Admissions Office asked me to screen and score applicants, which I did for 10 years in 3 different regions. Meanwhile, I learned to edit others' written work, without removing their voice, at U. Cambridge's press syndicate and successfully applied for graduate degrees at Columbia. Later, I worked as a college guidebook researcher and college essay coach at internationally prominent admissions firms. I loved helping college applicants to brainstorm and improve their personal statements and supplemental essays, so, in 2021, I took the IECA Summer Training Institute. Now, I provide college counseling and college application guidance in everything from middle school summer planning, that allows teens to gain important skills as they explore potential majors and careers, to college list building, and from brainstorming the Common App personal statement to maximizing supplemental essays for the most selective colleges. My overarching goal as a college application advisor / independent college counselor is to help both high school students and college transfers to gain admission to multiple colleges where they will thrive academically and socially, while minimizing the financial cost and maximizing their preparation for potential careers. 100% of my past clients’ personal statements and supplemental essays (Why This College / Why This Major, etc.) have reflected their authentic voices. I provide samples loved by highly selective colleges and guide applicants through multiple rounds of questions and editing suggestions, so you can highlight how and why your unique stories and personal values make them terrific candidates. Overall, I will help you to maximize your college admissions odds by standing out positively in ways that highlight your personality, values, interests, voice, and unique stories. Besides

Growing up, I was so curious about stories of past societies, I majored in History during both my undergraduate (Georgetown) and graduate (Columbia) degrees. In 2007, I started to teach Social Studies in the classroom to grades 5-12. The next few years, I formally learned how to teach Humanities effectively at Columbia and Stony Brook. I began to tutor students in History and Government on the side in 2010. Eventually, I earned professional level teacher certification. I have enjoyed teaching students of all abilities, in the classroom and one-on-one, from Johns Hopkins CTY wonder kids to amazing special education and ELL push-in students. Thesis Writing

Thesis Writing

This Georgetown and Columbia grad has taught ELA and History since 2007, including at Johns Hopkins. A key component of those courses is teaching students how to strengthen their thesis drafting, and thus arguments, in their papers, essays, and speeches. I have also provided one-on-one writing tutoring since 2010. Using a process of guided practice, my students improve their ability to draft quickly and then improve these initial thesis claims while writing the rest of their paragraph, essay, or research paper. The vast majority raise their course grades significantly as a result, even from F to A+. After all, the thesis serves as the roadmap for the rest of your argument. Working with me, you will become more skilled over time, so that this process becomes easier, quicker and less painful.
United States History

United States History

Since 2010: 95% of clients raised their Social Studies grades to As or A-s within 2 months. 85% of AP United States History students earned a 5. College students working with me earned B+ or higher on their U.S. History exams and research papers. IB students practiced all 5 History of the Americas paper formats (1, 2, 3, HI, EE) using authentic IB materials. American History courses require: new ways of thinking, document analysis, comparisons across time and space, close reading, and insightful essay writing. I help students learn how to master content understanding, while improving their note-taking and study skills. My specialty is mentoring students to apply historical thinking in their essays, draft compelling thesis statements, and write successful document-based question essays and analytical long essays. Sessions often incorporate storytelling, to help students make connections across time and space. Whether teaching how to analyze past events or situations, or strengthen a written argument, I draw upon multiple approaches verified by cognitive research. I also maximize student effectiveness and minimizes student anxiety by providing clear feedback and examples. Often, my tutoring students become better students in other subjects too.

16 year old deemed her "fire"

Not sure what more you need to know. He is delighted to be working with Andrea and she has already sent him a ton of work to do outside their sessions. Yes she is expensive, but this is one case where you get what you pay for.

Andrea is excellent!

Andrea is absolutely wonderful teacher for my son. She is very knowledgeable and patient. My son feels very comfortable working with her. She always prepare for the class by providing helpful notes and practices for my son. She also helped my son to review his LEQ essay and gave great advice about the grammar and sentence structures and pointed out the weaker part of his essay. We feel so grateful to have connected with her and appreciate for all her help! We are looking forward to continue to work with her this and next school year!

D's to A's in AP Euro History

We were really struggling with AP Euro history, and Andrea was able in the span of 2 weeks to get our student to getting A's on homework, tests, and quizzes and lessen the anxiety of this tough course. She taught our student how to study and get organized, and learn how to take tests. We highly recommend.

Amazing Resource for IB HOA Paper Preparation!

I cannot recommend Andrea enough! We came to Andrea with a last minute need to prep for the IB HOA HL exams. What she managed to structure into a 90 minute session was amazing and so beneficial for my student. Our only regret is not going to Andrea sooner. She demonstrated many clear and concise answer approaches and modeling that was invaluable come test time. Well worth every penny!

Excellent Teacher

My daughter is a grade 9 student and she took one class with Andrea for her world history paper. Andrea was an excellent teacher. She went above and beyond to help my daughter. Her comments were straight to the point and very helpful. My daughter previously always had B for her history class but after just one class with Andrea, she was able to raise her history score to A-. We are very thankful for Andrea’s help. We will for sure look for Andrea’s help again next semester for her American history class.

Excellent.Caring.Dedicated

We engaged Andrea as my son's Modern Global (college prep) tutor and couldn't be more pleased with the experience and results. She is highly professional and passionate with her teachings. Her mastery of subject and well-researched resources are truly amazing. My son loves history and finds her guidance highly valuable. If we can give her more than 5 stars (the max), we would!
