ACT Reading

ACT Reading

As a former teacher of middle and high school English, to students with processing skill deficits, dyslexia, and ADHD, and recipient of specific training in numerous reading comprehension techniques, I am well equipped to help you improve reading, whether for English or history class, or a standardized exam. I can help you learn techniques to better absorb, process, note, retain, and analyze what you have read. My first reading students were actually preparing for the ACT and SAT. They went on to improve their SAT Reading scores by 150-300 points! Now that Khan Academy has basic test prep available for free online, and provides feedback about your weakest skills, I can more quickly help you build upon your initial study activities by providing additional, in-depth, customized instruction in those specific aspects, using readings you will enjoy.
American History

American History

Since 2010: 95% of clients raised their Social Studies grades to As or A-s within 2 months. 85% of AP United States History students earned a 5. College students working with me earned B+ or higher on their U.S. History exams and research papers. IB students practiced all 5 History of the Americas paper formats (1, 2, 3, HI, EE) using authentic IB materials. American History courses require: new ways of thinking, document analysis, comparisons across time and space, close reading, and insightful essay writing. I help students learn how to master content understanding, while improving their note-taking and study skills. My specialty is mentoring students to apply historical thinking in their essays, draft compelling thesis statements, and write successful document-based question essays and analytical long essays. Sessions often incorporate storytelling, to help students make connections across time and space. Whether teaching how to analyze past events or situations, or strengthen a written argument, I draw upon multiple approaches verified by cognitive research. I also maximize student effectiveness and minimizes student anxiety by providing clear feedback and examples. Often, my tutoring students become better students in other subjects too.

Government & Politics

Government & Politics

As a former research assistant at both the U.S. Congress and a federal commission, I have an inside perspective on how our national government works. My Georgetown SFS graduate courses, U. Cambridge Social Sciences apprenticeship, Columbia graduate courses, and extensive reading have qualified me to understand and keep me up to date on diverse governmental systems worldwide. These experiences also enable me to help students learn to think like a political scientist and therefore succeed in their AP or college course. I help with: understanding key concepts and terms, learning how to conduct the various forms of written analysis, and even crafting a research paper. I customize sessions and homework to each student's needs and interests.
Interview Prep

Interview Prep

I was first trained as a professional candidate interviewer back in 1995 by Georgetown U. Since then, I have not only vetted candidates for several non-profits, but provided countless mock interviews, complete with feedback, that successfully prepared candidates for all kinds of jobs and selective programs.
Literature

Literature

Gain assistance with taking reading notes, preparing for class discussions, conducting literary analysis of non-fiction, fiction, and poetry, studying for exams, and drafting papers. ELA teacher and tutor in NYS since 2010.
Regents

Regents

90% of my Regents History clients scored a 93 or higher on their Regents History exam, many despite learning disabilities. However, I’m very proud that the exceptions successfully strengthened their skills and knowledge so much that they passed with a margin on the first try. I have been tutoring both Regents Global History and Geography, and Regents U.S. History and Government since the spring of 2010, including during these first few years of the new formats. I have also taught these two courses in the classroom. Recently, I created thousands of practice questions following the new format for both Regents Global 2 and the Regents U.S. History exams: stimulus-based multiple-choice questions, constructed response short answers, and enduring issues essays. I actually love these new formats, finding them to be more thoughtful and less rote memorization inducing than the old formats. So, I would love to help your teenager with thesis statements, analysis, and paper organization as they prepare for these exams!

Study Skills

Study Skills

One of the most important tasks when providing tutoring is to identify the best study techniques for a particular student. I have extensive experience helping regular, honors, and AP students to improve their study skills and raise their grades. As an inquisitive teacher, I am quite familiar with a large variety of successful study methods. My own schooling, training and various teaching experiences enable me to help each student to identify and master the most beneficial study technique(s) for him/her. In addition, I help students to set up weekly and semester schedules that better accommodate busy schedules, prevent any need for last minute cramming, and facilitate multiple paper drafts. Please note that I am also qualified and experienced in assessing reasons that students are struggling in English and History classes. I would be happy to give your teen an assessment and then either work with them further myself or refer your family to multiple amazing Executive Function coaches, whichever approach would be best for your teen.
Thesis Writing

Thesis Writing

This Georgetown and Columbia grad has taught ELA and History since 2007, including at Johns Hopkins. A key component of those courses is teaching students how to strengthen their thesis drafting, and thus arguments, in their papers, essays, and speeches. I have also provided one-on-one writing tutoring since 2010. Using a process of guided practice, my students improve their ability to draft quickly and then improve these initial thesis claims while writing the rest of their paragraph, essay, or research paper. The vast majority raise their course grades significantly as a result, even from F to A+. After all, the thesis serves as the roadmap for the rest of your argument. Working with me, you will become more skilled over time, so that this process becomes easier, quicker and less painful.

Writing

Writing

During the school year, my writing instruction is integrated with Social Studies tutoring and English tutoring. Over the summer, I offer a special, customized, enrichment module in both creative writing and academic writing for students in grades 5-14. I have taught English and History since January 2007, and currently hold teacher certification in two states. My classroom and tutoring instructional experiences have strengthened my ability to guide students through the processes of crafting creative short stories, academic essays, research papers, narrative essays, and literature reviews. I will teach you how to strengthen and prove an argument, or to present a unique story through showing, not telling. I supplement my writing instruction and editing suggestions with grammar tips and guidelines. Whether you need help with brainstorming techniques, organizing your thoughts into a coherent essay using the perfect graphic organizer, forming and expanding the analytical meat of body paragraphs and conclusions to conclusively prove a thesis, or perfecting the storytelling craft, I would love to mentor you as you improve as a writer!

16 year old deemed her "fire"

Not sure what more you need to know. He is delighted to be working with Andrea and she has already sent him a ton of work to do outside their sessions. Yes she is expensive, but this is one case where you get what you pay for.

Amazing Resource for IB HOA Paper Preparation!

I cannot recommend Andrea enough! We came to Andrea with a last minute need to prep for the IB HOA HL exams. What she managed to structure into a 90 minute session was amazing and so beneficial for my student. Our only regret is not going to Andrea sooner. She demonstrated many clear and concise answer approaches and modeling that was invaluable come test time. Well worth every penny!

Excellent Teacher

My daughter is a grade 9 student and she took one class with Andrea for her world history paper. Andrea was an excellent teacher. She went above and beyond to help my daughter. Her comments were straight to the point and very helpful. My daughter previously always had B for her history class but after just one class with Andrea, she was able to raise her history score to A-. We are very thankful for Andrea’s help. We will for sure look for Andrea’s help again next semester for her American history class.

Excellent.Caring.Dedicated

We engaged Andrea as my son's Modern Global (college prep) tutor and couldn't be more pleased with the experience and results. She is highly professional and passionate with her teachings. Her mastery of subject and well-researched resources are truly amazing. My son loves history and finds her guidance highly valuable. If we can give her more than 5 stars (the max), we would!

Very helpful with APUSH prep

She was very organized and sent prep information before the session so my daughter could fully get the most out of her time. She was very impressed with how she presented the information, and she feels much more prepared!

Amazing Tutor for my 8th Grader

My daughter was struggling with her analytical writing this year so we looked at a few tutors before deciding to go with Andrea. Andrea assessed my daughter and said she was in line with the skill level of an 8th grader, and didn't see any issues with her writing. Once she realized the school was pushing for work that was equivalent to 9th grade level writing, Andrea was great to pivot. Andrea provides great topics that are interesting to my daughter and actually enjoys working on during the week.

Extremely knowledgeable and patient

My daughter is being tutored on AP World History. In just 2 sessions, she has learned a lot about how to write DBQ’s - much more detailed than her own teacher. Very thorough. My older daughter used her as well and she did well on the AP exam. Would highly recommend!
