Hi my name is Shilpi! I have a Master's degree in Mathematics Education from Teacher's College, Columbia. I've been an educator since 2000, teaching multiple grade levels from Pre-Kindergarten through college. I became an educator by accident while completing my undergraduate studies because I wasn't happy with my major. A friend would often share his student teaching experiences and encouraged me to try an education course. The rest is history! I fell in love with teaching!

I would describe my teaching style as a bit casual and more like a discussion or conversation. My idea of teaching a new concept is to review a previously understood concept highlighting key details and making a connection to the new concept. I like for students to be active participants of the learning process. It has been my experience that most students are math phobic or have some sort of math anxiety from past experiences. I believe establishing a more relaxed environment creates a safe and comfortable space where students are more likely to not only overcome their math anxiety, but also be on a more empowered path towards success. Additionally, I have found that students often leave a tutoring session feeling confident but are unable to explain or demonstrate their understanding of the concepts afterwards. Devoting the time and effort to engage with the learning process as we move through the concepts together has led students to better understanding and greater retention.
Despite my years of experience, one thing remains true— I enjoy continuing my education by learning about new methodologies for teaching math. Education and teaching is forever an evolving realm and I like to keep up as much as possible through reading published works and attending workshops. I also appreciate the wealth of knowledge and experience students share with me, as I find that can be beneficial for the learning process.
Feel free to contact me with any additional questions or to schedule a session! I look forward to hearing from you!
