About Colleen Marie

Hi! My name is Colleen and I love tutoring on Wyzant. I have an extensive tutoring and teaching background, which started when my high school Latin teacher offered me a part-time job tutoring other students after school. Since then, I've been tutoring one subject or another for over two decades. My main areas for tutoring are English/ESL, French, German, and History, although I'm also approved to tutor in several other related areas. While a high school teacher in Massachusetts, I administered and proctored the ACT exam. As a professional public school tutor in New York State, I proctored and administered the Regents exam for home-bound students. Below I list the details for each area of study I offer on Wyzant. Please feel free to message me with any questions!

ESL/English: I taught English as a Second Language to students in Germany for Studienkreis, and taught Business English to the CEO and top managerial staff of Rowo, GmbH. I currently teach ESL students on Wyzant and love doing so! It's exciting and rewarding to see students learn new language concepts and then use them effectively and with pride. My approach for ESL is highly individualized: whether a student needs to brush up on business English, study for the TOEFL, sound more like a native speaker, or just become more confident in pronunciation and everyday English, I'm here to help!

Proofreading/Editing: If you need help in written English or proofreading papers, essays, or applications, I'm your go-to tutor. In addition to my tutoring work, since 2007 I've been a professional freelance editor and proofreader whose clients have included Chanel, McGraw-Hill, and American Express, among others. While an editor in New York City, I proofread educational materials, including the SAT Exam. I've also been the executive editor of a literary press. My LinkedIn profile is available upon request.

French, German, & Classical Latin: I am certified in German by The Goethe Institute in Frankfurt-am-Main, Germany. I hold a B.A. degree in European Cultural Studies with a concentration in German. My secondary cultural focus was French. I have lived in France, Germany, and England. I've travelled to Rome and other major cities in Italy, Switzerland, and francophone Belgium and Canada, which affords me the opportunity to bring firsthand cultural knowledge to my students when tutoring foreign languages and European History. I've been an adjunct instructor of French and German at the State University of New York, Empire State College for seven years and have formerly taught secondary English, French, German, and Latin at a boarding school in New England. During my time as a language teacher I founded and advised the German Club, in which students regularly viewed and discussed German-language films, participated in cultural activities, and put on a school-wide German dinner evening featuring authentic cuisine from the German-speaking countries. Latin was my first tutoring job. I took it from grades 7-11 for a total of five years, and would have taken it in 12th grade, but I graduated a year early. I taught first-year Latin at the high school level at a private boarding school. Please note that I do not offer ecclesiastical Latin; I tutor classical Latin.

History: I hold a B.A. degree in European Cultural Studies with a concentration in German. My secondary focus was French. I've studied abroad in both France and Germany. An avid history buff, my main area of interest in this field is European history from ancient times to World War I. I am particularly knowledgeable about the European age of revolution (especially the American Revolution and the French Revolution), ancient Greece and Rome, the Enlightenment, and early medieval Europe. My specialty is 17th and 18th century Europe and North America (colonial and revolution era). I'm approved to tutor in all three areas of history on Wyzant: European History, American History, and World History. I am also approved to tutor in Government and Politics. My specialty for that area is the early American Republic and founding documents of the Constitution and Declaration of Independence. Apart from languages, history is my number one passion, hence my degree in European Cultural studies (I could combine the two).

I have extensive experience tutoring and substitute teaching for two public school districts as well as privately from kindergarten to the college-level. However, I prefer to work with students from middle school to the adult level. I use a highly individualized approach with each student, as each student has a different learning style, which I appreciate. I'm patient, adaptable, and work hard at encouraging my students, especially those who are struggling. I enjoy working with students of all backgrounds and learning styles. Thank you!

Excellent proofreeading

It turned out that I had more work to proofread then I had thought to tell her. After I received the work I guess I started thinking about a lot of other work I needed done and just piled it on. She did more than I expected, which was great even with my short time frame.
