I have been working in digital media and the arts since 1989, Photoshop since 1990, and Lightroom since 2006 (when it was in beta), and photography since 2005. My work has always comprised a balance of artistic and technical skills. Throughout my career, I have been responsible for bridging the gap between the two for the benefit of clients and associates; I can translate freely between the languages of both sides.

I can help you move from point-and-shoot to taking more creative and exacting control with your camera, and move from simply auto-enhancing your photos to turning them into the the image you envisioned when you pressed the shutter, using Photoshop and Lightroom. I'll reduce the overwhelm associated with these applications, and help you focus on the tools you need to get the results you want.

I am a native user to both MacOS (since 1984) and Windows systems (since 1991).
Adobe Illustrator since 1987.
Adobe Lightroom since 2006.

I have been using Photoshop since 1990, when it was first released, as a tool for photographic enhancement and retouching, as a digital darkroom, for graphic design, interactive media design, web element creation, logo and brand design, compositing, special effects, presentation decks, and more.

I am available for most topics around photography, whether digital- or film-based, from how to use your SLR to lighting for a studio shoot, to processing and enhancing your photos. I will create a lesson based on the topics you wish to cover, focusing on exactly what you want to know. My style is direct, to the point, in a manner you can understand, and based on your experience. Please contact me to discuss your topics of interest. Thanks!

Approved Subjects

Adobe Illustrator

Adobe Illustrator

I have been working with Adobe Illustrator since 1986, from logo design to advertising layout. As part of the Adobe creative suite, this tool has been invaluable to the rest of my work in multimedia and graphic design. My tutoring covers many of the practical uses of these apps, working through typical tasks and projects the student will encounter.
Adobe InDesign

Adobe InDesign

Graphic design has been an integral part of my work for over thirty years, having used Pagemaker, Quark Xpress, and now Adobe InDesign to create layouts for print and screen. I've produced books, promotional materials, web page designs, and UX wireframes within InDesign, and have experience satisfying a printers' exacting job specifications. I have helped students with their publications, from posters to coloring books, to text books. I can help you gain confidence in using InDesign, learn how to integrate it into the rest of the Adobe Suite, and advise you on preflight preparation for submission to a printer.
Adobe Lightroom

Adobe Lightroom

I've been working with Adobe Lightroom since 2006, using it to organize and manage my photographic library. More importantly, it has helped me to reduce my post-production time dramatically, improving turn-around times, and saving my clients money. In my tutoring sessions, I can help you realize all of these benefits, too! I recommend to anyone who is serious about their photography to add Lightroom skills to their repertoire.
Adobe Photoshop

Adobe Photoshop

I have worked in Photoshop since 1990, and use it for a wide variety of applications, from photography to graphic design. I have tutored clients privately on a number of topics, most relevantly general computer usage, Photoshop, Lightroom, and photography.
General Computer

General Computer

I have been working with personal computers since 1977. I am equally comfortable inside the Macintosh and Windows environments, have taught people how to use both, and help them make a painless transition from one to the other. I've studied computer science and worked in software development. I also done software training for the pharmaceutical industry for product rollouts.
Macintosh

Macintosh

I have been using Macintosh computers continuously since 1984 for all computing purposes. I have worked in Interactive media and creative fields since 1989, heavily dependent on Mac-only software, in the beginning, to run my business and provide services to my clients. I've set up local area networks for my own business, upgraded my Macs (RAM, hard drives, component replacements), and owned easily a dozen Macs over the years. I've tutored people on subjects from general Mac usage to specific applications (i.e., Photoshop). I have consulted on hardware issues, such as repairs, upgrades, and purchase advice. I was an officer of the New York Mac Users' Group from 1990-1992, and recognized as an expert in my field.
Photography

Photography

I've been involved in photography since 2005, experienced in both film and digital techniques. I am quite comfortable in both the real darkroom and in digital, and my post-production flow reflects how I worked in film. I have experience with film and digital SLRs, medium-format, and mirrorless cameras, studio and natural lighting, and working with models. My goal is to get the shot before the shutter button is pressed, and I teach others to have patience and do the same. I've done fashion, product, portraiture, and food photography, commercial projects, event coverage, weddings and engagements, figure studies, and art photography. In terms of post-production, I have extensive Photoshop and Lightroom experience, and know how to organize, adjust, and retouch a job quickly and effectively. I work with absolute beginners and experienced shooters. I can help you get familiar with a new camera or help you improve your techniques. I'm available to work with you in-person and remotely, using most any photography gear you have. I'm also happy to make recommendations for products that will enhance your photography experience.

Amazing Instructor

DJ was the perfect tutor for me and my son. We learned so much in our session. DJ knows all the complexities of Photoshop, and teaches at just the right pace. I give him the highest of recommendations.

Ron, 4 lessons with D. J.

Knowledgeable and patient.

D.J. and I connected very quickly on technology old and new. He reassured me that the challenges I was struggling with are very common. We accomplished a lot in our first hour which has enabled me to get a lot of work done since then. I look forward to our next session together.

D.J. Consummate Teacher

D.J. Is extremely knowledgeable on all aspects of Lightroom Classic and, just as importantly, communicates his expertise in ways that are understandable to those of us with less expertise.

Order out of a complete chaos

A lifetime of images (~100,000) from my camera, iPhone, videos, and emails were a total mess and I couldn't find anything. DJ has been incredible about helping me to bring order out of chaos by migrating all of the images into Lightroom and creating a file structure that will serve me going forward.

Listens well and understanding of problem

DJ did a great job helping me de-tangle my Lightroom catalog without making me feel stupid for the mess that it was. He also showed me new and different ways to do things. So excited to have this figured out and my photos organized and backed up!!!

Shannon, 2 lessons with D. J.

Knowledgeable and flexible

If you need lightroom assistance look no further. My multiple catalogs were a hoarder situation, now im all organized 😎. I will book again. Next session I will expand my knowledge of editing

Great Lightroom Tudor - and more

Lightroom- he’s a genius-exactly what I needed as a less experienced Lightroom user-and he’s quick to get to the solutions . He really understands where I was struggling and he quickly got to the source and helped me solve the problem.I will be returning to him for additional help

Dick, 2 lessons with D. J.

Very knowledgable and quick with advice

DJ has cleaned up the mess I made of LRC . I had been trying to copy ideas from multiple you tube "experts" and for me I needed more one on one guidance. He should write a book so I can use as a reference going forward because somethings I don't pick up right away.

James, 2 lessons with D. J.

Amazing

DJ came to my house, he traveled 1hour. I am a professional photographer. I needed to have some lessons about light room and Cannon before I switch my camera and soft-wear DJ is super nice, super professional, I learned what I needed to know thank you DJ

Raya, 1 lesson with D. J.

DJ really knows his stuff

He worked with me on recovering photos and syncing data bases. When lightroom updated with the new AI some photos got moved from one drive to another and left a grayed out photo in the library screen only showing the photo number. Might have been operator error-me.
