About Steven

Math and science knowledge excites and inspires me. When I see math problems, I can visualize multiple approaches to get to the solution. I also love breaking down complex science concepts into tangible and intuitive analogies. There is art and beauty in creative problem solving in math and science, and it is my pleasure to share this enthusiasm with others in the context of achieving high scores on important Regents, SAT/ACT, SAT II subject tests, and AP exams.

I earned a Bachelor of Science in human development from Cornell University and a Master of Biomedical Sciences from Rutgers University. I am currently in dental school at Touro College of Dental Medicine. As part of my studies, I trained as a mental health counselor, so I can empathize with students through tutoring and help them overcome any adverse feelings about confidence or skills. This helps me make an authentic, human connection with students, so I can better serve their needs.

My math background is extensive. When I was a student at Bronx High School of Science, I received an 800 on the SAT math and 790 on the SAT Math Level II Subject Test. I have tutored all levels of math, including algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and calculus. I've been a Mathnasium instructor to help students K-12 succeed in the Common Core system. I was also on my high school math team, so I can help students learn to recognize patterns and shortcuts to do math more quickly and accurately.

In sciences, I tutor biology, chemistry, and psychology on the high school (Regents) and college (AP) level. Because of my undergraduate and graduate training focused on social sciences and dentistry, I've built depth in these sciences and happy to teach these topics with applications to health and medicine.

I also have taught several SAT classes and can tutor all three sections of the new SAT. When I took my SAT, I scored a 2200 out of 2400, which was the 99th percentile that year. I am familiar with the changes to the new SAT and I can work with students on test taking strategies to maximize their score. Outside of the SAT, I also work with students who wish to improve their general reading and writing skills.

I hope to make your math, science, and SAT journey feel like a positive adventure -- working through any weaknesses to shape new strengths.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Biology

I completed a Masters degree in biomedical sciences, so I am familiar with all topics of general biology and built depth in concepts that are relevant to health sciences. Because biology contains many topics that don't always connect together, I tutor biology by organizing and drawing out diagrams as much as possible to help students visualize each concept or process. I am prepared to tutor biology at the high school and college level.

Chemistry

I received a 730 on the SAT II Chemistry Subject Test and a 5 on the AP Chemistry exam. I had excellent teachers, who taught me chemistry in ways that broke down each concept into logical analogies and then connected it back to the big picture. I use a similar approach when tutoring chemistry and I am prepared to provide chemistry help at the high school and college level.

Precalculus

Do you know why e^(i x pi) +1 = 0 is known as the most beautiful equation? Precalculus is one of my favorites in math because many topics describe elegant ways to perceive math. My approach to tutoring precalculus is to show students how it builds on the basics in algebra, geometry, and trigonometry. This would help students have a holistic understanding of precalculus topics and hopefully also appreciate the beauty and applications in math.

SAT Math

I received a perfect score of 800 on the SAT math section. With a lot of SAT prep myself, I am familiar with SAT structure and recommendations for maximizing your score. I was also a math team member for 4 years in high school, so I know a lot of mathematical shortcuts that can help students save time on the SAT.

Excellent Tutor!

There is not enough I can say about Steven. He has saved our son from failing chemistry and algebra in our son's most important year in highschool. We saw immediate results when Steven came for the first couple of sessions and our son went from bringing home a 50 on exams to a 94 after 2 sessions with Steven. Steven rakes the time to assess and examine where the student is and how the student lear
