As a working artist and educator I have sought to prepare my students for a career in the arts. I am experienced in portfolio development and presentation skills for college entrance as well as assisting students on essays, recommendations and scholarship requirements. My former students have received top awards in the Scholastic Art Awards Competition at the 'Gold Key' level in drawing, painting and printmaking. They have received early admission to art school and scholarships based on merit.

My approach to drawing and painting is based on my studies at the Lyme Academy of Fine Art which modeled their program on the French Ateliers of the 19th century. My focus is on studio art and I am skilled in oils, pastels, charcoal, pencil, watercolor and relief printmaking. Students will explore various media and techniques to render from life. They will learn to organize a composition, achieve proper proportion and accuracy. Students will learn to model forms in 5-7 values achieving a three dimensional effect. Painting students will explore the process of carrying a painting to completion. Students will study value, learn how to find the mid-tone, apply paint in a fat over lean process, set a palette and understand color and color temperature. This foundation will demonstrate the necessary skills that art schools expect of applicants.

Drawing

Drawing

I graduated from the Lyme Academy of Fine Art and received the John Stobart Fellowship in painting and traveled to Italy to study. I teach my students the French Academic method of drawing which assists in taking one's visual experience and accurately rendering a 3-D reality onto a two dimensional surface. Students will study a method to self-correct one's work through vertical, horizontal and proportional comparisons. Working in charcoal students will model a drawing in 5-7 values to achieve dimensional relief.
Painting

Painting

I graduated from the Lyme Academy of Fine Art and received the John Stobart Fellowship in painting and traveled to Italy to study. Students study the materials and methods of painting in either oil, acrylic, pastel or watercolor. Students gain an understanding of setting a palette and working from a limited palette to achieve accurate values, color and color temperature. Students learn how to find the mid-tone of objects and proceed to discerning the shape of the shadow, the light area, the half-tones and the highlight to achieve a feeling of three dimensional relief. Basic studio practice is discussed including safety with materials, stretching canvas, varnishes, mediums and framing.
