Since I finished my MFA degree in Film and TV Directing in 1997, I have continuously been working as a filmmaker and as a film professor for over 16 years now. My employment history spans several countries such as Bulgaria, Finland, the USA and Canada, covering activities both in the film industry and the educational fields. The spectrum of my filmography varies from narrative shorts, to short and feature-length documentaries, to TV documentary and fiction projects, to feature-length scripts and theatrical plays, to theatrical staging. My experience encompasses principal creative and technical involvement in these projects through directing, writing, producing, editing, cinematography and sound design. My continuous intense practicing in the film production field has kept me up-to-date with most innovative technologies (including film, video and digital production and post-production in most film and digital formats) and has earned me recognition as a professional authority on film. My works have been invited and showcased at countless renowned film forums on four continents; they have won a sustained international acclaim at numerous professional venues across the globe – including Cannes Film Festival’s official selection – and have consequently been crowned with multiple awards.

My film teaching experience includes over 4 years of college level teaching and another 3-4 years of tutoring and non-film related teaching and lecturing. My teaching expertise covers a relatively wide scope of disciplines, including Film/Video Directing (both fiction and documentary, with special emphasis on directing the actors), Producing, Screenwriting (documentary and fiction; short and feature), Digital Cinematography, Film/Video Production, Editing (proficient in Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere, above medium expertise in Avid Media Composer), Acting, and Film Studies (film history, criticism and film theories). I have expertise and experience in theater as well.

My simplified teaching formula is: “work, work and work”. I tend to give my students a lot of work as I think there’s no better way of learning than practice, especially in film and video. Students tend to notice my enthusiasm before anything else about me. It creates relations based on responsibility, respect and personal example. The amount of work I expect them to complete is always matched with an even greater amount of work I myself do for them.

While I require strict direction following and complying with assigned tasks, I am at the same time exceptionally open to experimental and innovative ventures. My curiosity is normally given a strong push by the challenge to try unexplored technical and creative territories along with my students. The thrill for both students and instructor of discovering unpredictable results together while mastering basic skills, has become an important part in the process of student project realization.

I am an experienced filmmaker and film educator with an extensive background in Film and Video Directing, Writing, Producing and Editing, spanning over 16 years now. I have an MFA degree in Film and TV Directing as well as over 4,5 years of college and university level film teaching experience (and another 3-4 years of non-film related teaching, lecturing and tutoring). My film production skills have been furnished through elaborate work on sophisticated creative and commercial projects. I have full technical, aesthetic and managing expertise in all major aspects of film/video production and post-production, including technical proficiency in most editing platforms – Final Cut Pro, Avid Media Composer and Adobe Premiere, as well as functional shooting skills with many HD and Ultra HD cameras. I can offer both practical hands-on learning experience and theoretical knowledge in a wide range of film-related disciplines. The theoretical part is generally known as Film Studies and it includes film history, film theories, film criticism/analysis, structural elements of film (e.g. camera work, lighting, editing, sound, narrative, modes of screen reality, etc.), as well as past and contemporary filmmaking styles and trends of film expression. The theoretical part also includes knowledge on film technologies and aesthetic techniques in creating memorable screen stories. Practical learning consists of hands-on exercises with camera, non-linear editing and sound processing equipment, disclosing the secrets of creating professional looking film images and appealing screen narratives.
Video Production

Video Production

Except for having an MFA degree in Film and TV Directing, I have also actively practiced video production teaching at a college level for more than 4 years now. My experience and expertise cover all theoretical and practical aspects of video production backed-up with extensive knowledge on the latest technology trends in the industry. Theory encompasses the principles of the digital image formation, the video formats, types of video cameras, compression and file formats, production stages, etc. In practical terms, I can lead you through an id-depth hands-on, step by step learning of the Non-linear Editing platforms, such as Apple’s Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere or Avid Media Composer. We can also go through an overview to advanced grip on the script writing process, as well as through the main principles of shooting any video camera, including lighting and color, along with a thorough analysis on the overall workflow and creative specifics of filmmaking. Finally, I could teach you the most advanced techniques of film/video directing, both for the fiction and documentary genres, in which I have substantial creative and academic experience.

Bulgarian

Apart from being a native Bulgarian speaker and having completed all my levels of education up to my terminal (MFA) degree in Bulgaria, I have been frequently involved in Bulgarian language teaching and tutoring throughout my post-secondary school years. I have used several different textbook-based methodologies, as well as have designed compilations of methods based on my own personal vision and/or the individual students' needs and levels. I also make use of my extensive experience teaching the English language for more than 7 years now through applying my linguistic approaches to a wide variety of age groups and levels in combination with my thorough knowledge of the Bulgarian language.
