I have been studying guitar privately for 27 years, have taught for 20 years and I am qualified to teach jazz/pop/rock guitar, improvisation, and theory. I graduated from the music performance program at Queensborough Community College. At Q.C.C. I was fortunate to receive formal training in ear training/ sight singing I-IV, music theory I-IV, convocation performance, performance juries, as well as receiving private lessons focused on jazz improvisation. I was also trained in the fundamentals of piano I-IV and can help beginning piano students if called upon. (I'm familiar with the ABRSM for piano up till grade 3). I majored in guitar performance concentrating on jazz improvisation but I also have been studying guitar privately for around 27 years with a strong emphasis on rock and pop. My father is a professional musician and music teacher in the U.K and this afforded many performance and learning opportunities from an early age, by the age of 16 I was already wearing a suit and tie, playing with his 'function' band at weddings and was also fortunate to experience musician theatre pit work.

During my time studying at Q.C.C. I enjoyed working as a music tutor for college level music theory students.

My tuition brings:

Personalized, well prepared, fun and practical lessons.

Continuation, each class builds on previously learned material.

Progress checks using memos taken during teaching.

My students know me for my patience, detail, and positive reinforcement, but also equally for placing importance on helping the student find his/her joy through the instrument.

Prior to studying at Q.C.C I lived in South Korea for 7 years where I studied as a meditation monk. This monastic period of my life gifted me with lots of diverse and valuable experiences, ranging from leading Buddhist/meditation classes for kids/teens/college to learning to converse in Korean at a high level.

After returning to lay life, I still teach meditation once a week in New Jersey and am raising two teenage step sons aged 14 and 18 with my

I have been playing guitar for 27 years. I received private lessons in my formative years and more recently completed 3 years of formal education in Q.C.C's revamped music performance program. The formal training in ear training/ sight singing I-IV, music theory I-IV, convocation performance, performance juries, as well as receiving private lessons on guitar focused on jazz improvisation, helped round off the general musical training I had received my whole life.

Awesome instructor.

Steve has been great in each of my four lessons. We've covered site reading, scales, intervals, chords, and finger placement. I'm getting a lot out of these lessons, largely because of his patience and proficiency as an artist and a tutor. 5 stars.

A real teacher

I've played guitar aimlessly for decades; self-taught (in other words, taught by somebody who knows next to nothing), I've made little musical progress. Every now and then I'd ask a guitar player for lessons. All excellent players, but none of them had a method or a curriculum. They weren't teachers. Steve is my first guitar and music teacher. It's been years since I've "performed" in front of anybody other than my wife; I'm predisposed to derailing anxiety, but Steve has a calming energy that defuses self-consciousness -- maybe it's the British accent; every so often I hear a bit of Archie Leach in his voice. I'm subject to blank spots, but Steve has been uncommonly patient and has also managed to work out when I've been overwhelmed by the material and needed to re-set. I'm old, and still a beginner, which is terribly embarrassing, and I have no hope of becoming the musician I might have been -- and yet Steve carries on with our lesson good-naturedly, smiling, gently encouraging my answer to a simple question that he has surely elicited from hundreds of other hopeless students, steadily refusing to appear daunted by the futility of our undertaking. I occasionally feel bad for him. Steve would probably make a good therapist, but, lucky for us, he's a musician and a teacher. A real one.

Wonderful Teacher!

As a beginner in guitar, I like the teaching style of Steve pretty much as it adjusts according to everyone's background knowledge and learning pace. The first class with Steve is really a wonderful one and I'll definitely follow Steve for future classes. I strongly recommend Steve as your guitar teacher!
