Hi, I'm Hannah, a former 5th grade teacher living in the Bay Area. I have had a passion for education since I was very young, beginning my tutoring and teaching career in high school.

From 9th through 12th grade, I tutored middle school students in multiple subjects through my high school's volunteer program. At this time, I also provided paid tutoring services for elementary through high school ages, focusing on English and Spanish reading help for English language learners, as well as essay writing and grammar. At the University of Chicago, I joined the University's Model UN program and became a tutor, and eventually a head tutor, working at nearby Chicago high schools to provide free tutoring services. I worked with a team to develop and enact lessons where we taught high schoolers public speaking, essay writing, and policy research skills.

Most recently, I was a Teach for America corps member, through which I served as a 5th grade bilingual teacher in San Jose, California. I taught multiple subjects in English and Spanish, including language arts, writing, science, social studies, and math. I created and followed standards-aligned curriculum for the class; conducted small groups for further help in math, reading, and writing; and tutored students with individualized education plans on a one-on-one basis before and after school.

Approved Subjects

ADHD

ADHD

I am a former 5th grade bilingual teacher, during which time I taught several students with individualized education plans, including those diagnosed with ADHD. For some of these students, as part of their IEPs, I provided one-on-one or small group instruction before, after, and during school in language arts, reading, or math, in order to help them focus, teach them healthy studying habits, and give them more personalized lessons. I also have experience helping students with ADHD focus and communicate in class, participate in group work, and succeed on individualized informal and formal testing.
College Counseling

College Counseling

I graduated in June 2023 from the University of Chicago, with a Bachelor's degree in Political Science and minor in Romance Languages and Literature. Throughout college, I worked with high school students via my university's Model UN organization to gain college success skills, teach them about the University of Chicago and similar universities, and learn what extracurriculars and subjects were beneficial to include on college applications. As a senior in high school, I was president of my school's Mentoring program, a three-pronged program of which one was college counseling; I oversaw and engaged in helping underclassmen prepare their transcripts and coursework for college applications, helped write and edit application essays, and promoted extracurricular activities that would be beneficial for college applications. I was also a classroom 5th grade teacher in 2023 at a public choice school in California; being educators at a choice bilingual school, our team facilitated events and classroom discussion that chiefly promoted college readiness and academic excellence.

I am a former 5th grade bilingual teacher, during which time I taught several students with individualized education plans, including those diagnosed with dyslexia. For some of these students, as part of their IEPs, I provided one-on-one or small group instruction before, after, and during school in language arts, reading, or math, in order to help them focus, give them specialized help with grammar and reading, and give them individualized instruction that was more suited to their strengths. I also have experience giving students with dyslexia scaffolding and assistance in class that helped them understand instruction visually and auditorally.

Prior to this, I have been an elementary tutor since high school; I have helped students learned to read in Spanish and English, taught math to students in second through fifth grades, and taught English and Spanish grammar and phonetics to students in first through fifth grades.
Public Speaking

Public Speaking

Throughout 9th-12th Grade and during my 4 years at the University of Chicago, I participated in Model United Nations, during which I gained and develloped exceptional public speaking skills. In Model UN, I learned to create succint, in-depth policy and diplomacy-focused speeches in informal and formal environments. In 11th and 12th grade, I became the Vice President of the Model UN club, and in my last year at UChicago, I became a Head Tutor for the Model UN organization's high school tutoring program; in both positions, I taught high school students how to develop the public speaking skills I had gained and enabled them to participate in Model UN conferences. At the University of Chicago, I also worked with the Institute of Politics, during which time I practiced public speech at University-wide events, including interviews with Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg and Chicago Alderwoman Maria Hadden.
