About Christopher

I have been tutoring Algebra, Geometry, Statistics, English, Writing, Philosophy, SAT, ACT, Grade school math and English as well as MS Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word) for over three years; there is nothing I enjoy more than watching my students succeed.

I create a relaxed environment for my students in order to make the work stress free and enjoyable. My goal is to make the coursework fun for the student by finding an approach to learning that works best based on their unique characteristics. Being able to empathize with students in order to understand where their challenges lie and patient in helping them overcome those hurdles is where I excel. By exploring different approaches to difficult concepts I break them into manageable pieces that fit with each students prior experience which make learning approachable rather than overwhelming. Behind every concept we have yet to master there is a myth in our mind about what it entails. Demystifying through creativity and humor allows my students to overcome a combination of fear, frustration and/or complacency that we all experience at some point while learning.

I have tutored dozens of students in the SAT and ACT and have helped them all increase their scores with most increasing their SAT score at least 100 points and some by over 400 points and on the ACT most by over 4 points and some by over 8 points. These are very difficult tests designed to be difficult to improve on. All of my students who gave themselves plenty of time to prepare and followed through on their promise to work on their own have seen significant score improvements. I have helped graduate students write Psychology and various other papers, college students write papers in all subjects, high school students with essays and college essays and all age groups with creative writing. I have helped dozens of college statistics students pass statistics and high school students with Algebra, Geometry, English, History and Science. I have also worked with numerous students on developing study skills; helping them find the fun in school as well as helping with their organization skills and approach to homework.

Previous to working as a tutor I worked for five years as a Reporting Analyst for an online marketing firm. I worked extensively in Excel, PowerPoint and Access and trained staff in their use. I am an expert in MS Office, in particular Excel. I am well versed in everything in Excel but in particular using formulas, pivot tables and macros to automate complex tasks related to correcting, organizing, analyzing and presenting large amounts of data. I am also an expert at creating PowerPoint presentations and managing databases in Access.

I graduated with a B.A. in Economics from Pitzer College in 2006 and, as I previously mentioned worked for five years working as a reporting analyst focusing mostly on Excel. I started tutoring in 2012 as a way to gain more free time to pursue my passion in writing and found that I have a passion for teaching. I started with Excel but quickly decided to re-learn other subjects having previously been a strong student and test taker. I currently work as a freelance screenwriter and tutor. I am passionate about both and feel lucky to be able to be an influence on my students lives.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

SAT Math

I have helped over a dozen students over the last three years improve their SAT math scores by over 100 points with some achieving a more than 200 point improvement. There are clear types of questions the math section of the SAT repeatedly asks. The first step to mastering the test is to know how to do each type, the next and most often neglected step is to know how to do each type with ease and the last step is to be able to quickly recognize each type and apply the techniques necessary for solving them. My method for achieving this is to explain the concepts multiple ways to find the one that makes most sense to the student. Then I have students repeatedly do each type until they become commonplace. Last, I have them do as many practice tests as possible so they learn to apply the concepts utilizing time management. By repeating each question type rather than doing one and moving one I ensure that the concept sticks in the student's mind. By repeatedly taking practice tests students earn the confidence they need on testing day to perform their best.

Over 6 weeks, Christopher managed to teach me a subject that was previously- despite alternate intervention and endless review- impenetrable. Patient, kind, and brilliant, I can think of no one more qualified for teac ...
