Hi, Everyone. I would be happy to work with you on essay writing, reading skills, literature analysis, grammar, ACT, ESL/ESOL, or anything else English-related.

My philosophy is to bring out your talents and skills through careful questioning. Most importantly, I will not do the work for you, but show you how to do it.

I have more than 20 years of English teaching experience at the college and high school levels. At the college level, I have taught Intro to Composition and Intro to Literature. On the high school level, I have taught English (Certified 6-12) and ESL (Certified K-12) to 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grades. I have also taught adult ESL classes and have been a writing tutor at a college writing center.

I have a Bachelor's in English from Queens College, CUNY, a Master's Degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages from Lehman College, CUNY, and a Master's in Applied Linguistics from Queens College, CUNY.

I also offer a free 15-minute introductory chat to prospective students to see if we're a good fit for each other.

Approved Subjects

English

English

It could be writing an essay or interpreting literature. Or maybe it's both. Either way, I can help you clarify your thoughts and guide you to write clearly.
ESL/ESOL

ESL/ESOL

I've taught ESL at the high school and adult levels. We can work on any or all of the four language skills: reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Patience and understanding are also a big part of my teaching style.
Literature

Literature

I've taught prose, poetry, and drama on the high school and college levels with simple, easy-to-understand explanations. Whether it be plot summary vs. analysis, understanding literary elements, or just interpreting what the author meant by writing the piece of literature, I can help you gain a better understanding of the literature you are analyzing. Then, I'll help you write about it.
Reading

Reading

Reading comprehension can be difficult, especially with all the distractions that exist (in particular, cell phones.) I can help you with basic reading strategies like annotating, reading for main ideas vs. reading for details, and understanding vocabulary in context. Then, you can read better and more effectively.
Writing

Writing

I've taught writing at the high school and college levels. We can start at the basics with paragraph structure, work our way up to essay structure, or go beyond that with college-level papers.

Knowledgeable and Professional Tutor

Rich helped my son with a Macbeth essay for a British Literature class. He was accommodating and easy to work with for scheduling. He was also very helpful in brainstorming ideas, organizing thoughts, and making editing suggestions. He was very professional - helpful yet he pushed my son to do his own work. We would definitely work with him again!

Extremely Helpful Writing Tutor

Richard has been extremely helpful in assisting my son with his college essays. At their first meeting, he made it a point to get to know my son and also share a little about himself and share some similar experiences. Richard gives my son an opportunity to work on his essays and gives feedback on his writing. He also goes over his essays with him guiding him where he can improve his writing and offers his knowledge in improving his writing. Richard has many years of experience teaching at the high school and college level and feel very fortunate that my son is working with him and is improving with his writing skills.
