Hi, my name is Rael! I received my bachelors in math from NYU POLY, and my masters in education at PACE U. I currently teach at a charter school in San Diego, California. I attended both public and private schools, and I realize that teaching styles can be confusing to some students in both situations. I therefore take a more personalized approach to problem solving and solution finding. It is first based on careful interpretation of a problem. Then I examine the likelihood of a particular answer or set of answers. For example, the square root of 70 is most likely between 8 and 9. Then I attempt to explain the problem graphically, analytically, and finally computationally where applicable. I do this because, for example, while one student may comprehend the behavior of a graph visually, another may require a table. I conclude by checking the validity of the solution(s). "Plug and Chug" as it is referred to by my past students. It is my tested and proven method of understanding what is being taught. I found that memorization of certain formulas may save time on tests, but is less beneficial to the students' understanding of a topic than the aforementioned logical approach.

I am certified to teach grades 6 through 12 mathematics. I can tutor mathematics grades 6 through Multivariable Calculus. I was a teacher at NYU for high school students on weekends and was part of the TeachNYC program.

Approved Subjects

ACT Math

ACT Math

My most recent self-administered test score on the SAT math portion was 780 out of 800, without the use of a calculator. I am familiar with many of the strategies that you can use to maximize your effective time on questions that you have mastered, including quick calculations, shortcuts, and theorems, as well as how to estimate and eliminate answers from unfamiliar topics on the SAT and ACT math portions
Algebra 1

Algebra 1

I have developed curriculum for Algebra 1 that covers number theory, identities, balancing equations, interpreting word problems, building relations and functions, and solving for multiple variables.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

I have developed unit, lesson, and curriculum plans for algebra 2 for New York City public high schools and California charter and private schools.
Calculus

Calculus

I was a Math Major, so to pass Real Analysis, I had to literally prove the rules in calculus, using only arithmetic.
Elementary Math

Elementary Math

CA and NY certified secondary math teacher with 9 years of experience.
Geometry

Geometry

I have 9 years of certified teaching experience in New York and California teaching mathematics at the secondary level. I love to make the spatial reasoning concepts in geometry fun, interesting, and accessible, but also challenging by including competition math and questions from other countries math curricula.
Korean

Korean

I taught English in Korea for 4 years. While there, I studied rigorously, took and passed the level 1 Korean proficiency exam. I'm also married to a native Korean citizen and educator and we run a small after school language program.
Prealgebra

Prealgebra

I have several years of teaching experience at the high school level. Many public school students come into high school with significant learning gaps in pre-algebra, so I have lots of experience helping them to fill in those gaps and succeed in high school.
Precalculus

Precalculus

Precalculus involves graphing, solving systems of equations, and evaluating distributions, variances, and deviations of large sets of numbers. These reviews of statistics and probability are usually taught, as well as linear algebra, vector, and matrix math. I am comfortable with all of these topics and have helped several students to understand these concepts.
Probability

Probability

Probability includes everything from calculating the expected values of dice and card games to determining variances and standard deviations of various distribution models. Mastery requires a strong understanding of combinatorics and set theory. I have taught these concepts at the high school and occasionally at the AP levels for over 9 years.
SAT Math

SAT Math

My most recent self-administered test score on the SAT math portion was 780 out of 800, without the use of a calculator. I am familiar with many of the strategies that you can use to maximize your effective time on questions that you have mastered, including quick calculations, shortcuts, and theorems, as well as how to estimate and eliminate answers from unfamiliar topics on the SAT and ACT math portions
Trigonometry

Trigonometry

Excellent with angles and polygons, wave/converse/inverse sets: sine/cosecant/arcsin, cosine/secant/arccosine, tangent/cotangent/arctangent. Familiar with law of sin, law of cos, law of squared waves. Proficient in unit circle proof, arc length proof, Fourier transforms for sawtooth, square, and round waves.
