About Karen

I am a University at Buffalo writing instructor, tutor, and editor. My specialties are: English - writing composition, grammar, and editing; ESL instruction - writing, reading, and speaking; Job preparation; resume/cover letter/interview process; and, Test preparation - TOEFL, GED and SAT Writing. In addition to teaching courses at the University at Buffalo, I am a certified Career and Life Coach.

My background is quite diverse. I am a former ENG 101 and ENG 201 professor for the University at Buffalo. I am currently tutoring college and middle/high school students in writing and AP English, and young students in ELA. I also tutor non-native speakers (ESL) in writing and speaking. In this capacity, I provide instruction on pronunciation, word order and verb tense. I assist non-native speakers in improving their communication (conversation) skills and in mastering the American accent.

I have extensive experience editing dissertations, thesis papers, published research articles, proposals, and resumes. My ESL experience is also quite extensive, and many of the clients I have assisted are accomplished professionals.

During my 20+ years of teaching, I have worked with students of all ages. I have assisted students in preparing for New York State exams and TOEFL. As a result, my students have received excellent scores. I provide a creative and interesting approach to teaching and to tutoring. My philosophy is to make learning interesting, not mundane.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I am an experienced college English instructor. I taught ENG 101 (Writing Skills), ENG 201 (Advanced Writing Skills) and American Literature for seven years. In addition, I worked in a Learning Center at two different colleges, specializing in ESL. I provide editorial assistance in essay writing, dissertations and thesis papers; and, the majority of the individuals who I am currently tutoring are International students.

Public Speaking

I am an instructor at the University of Buffalo. I teach a Public Speaking and Oral Presentation skills course.

Study Skills

As a Writing Skills instructor at the college level, one of the topics I covered in ENG 101 was how to be an effective learner. This included tips on good study habits. It is vital for all students to be exposed to useful study skills, and many require assistance in understanding what those skills consist of.

I can offer students at any level, K- 12 as well as those enrolled in higher education, the tools needed to become effective learners by improving their study skills
