I'm Abby! I graduated with magna cum laude with a bachelor's degree in Human Performance with a concentration in recreational leadership and a minor in Professional Education, allowing me to gain a temporary teaching certificate in the state of Florida as well.

I have worked at a sports summer camp for kids ages 5-12 for the past 5 summers. I have been a substitute aide where I help students who need extra assistance in the classroom, I have been a full substitute teacher in a different district, I have done observational practicums in high school ESOL classes, as well as physical education classes, and I have been a babysitter on and off for over 10 years.

I enjoy helping students in all subjects, and through my college/ working experience, I have learned how to make learning fun and engaging. I have helped elementary students in math, science, social studies, writing, spelling, and even in physical education, sports, and fitness. While substitute teaching, I came across a lot of English language learners, where I was able to help teach them learn some English, and they were able to help me learn their native language! I think it is important to make the students feel heard by showing that I care about their native language as well!

Since I studied abroad in Greece, I can understand students' confusion in hearing a language they can hardly understand, and I want to be able to help create a safe environment for them to learn in.

Overall, I truly love teaching and want to share my knowledge as well as make learning fun for as many students as possible!

Approved Subjects

Elementary (K-6th)

Elementary (K-6th)

I am qualified to tutor elementary students because I hold a temporary teaching certificate in education in the state of Florida, which demonstrates my foundational knowledge of instructional practices and child development. In addition, I currently work as a substitute teacher in elementary schools, giving me hands-on experience managing classrooms and supporting students with diverse learning needs. I also have strong skills in core subject areas including elementary reading, writing, math, and science, allowing me to provide well-rounded academic support. These experiences have helped me develop strong communication skills and the ability to adapt lessons to meet individual student needs, and I am confident in my ability to create a positive and effective learning environment for elementary students.
ESL/ESOL

ESL/ESOL

I would be a good ESOL tutor because I have experience working directly with English language learners in real classroom settings. As part of my professional education minor, I observed a 12th-grade ESOL class, where I gained insight into instructional strategies that support students developing English proficiency. In addition, I work as a substitute teacher in elementary schools in Tampa, where I frequently interact with students who do not have English as their native language. These experiences have helped me develop patience, clear communication skills, and the ability to adapt instruction to meet diverse language needs.
Fitness

Fitness

I would be a strong tutor in this area because my coursework at the University of Tampa in Human Performance with a concentration in Recreational Leadership has given me a strong foundation in fitness, coaching, and motor learning. Through classes such as exercise leadership, physical education for special populations, and tests and measurement, I have learned how to break down complex skills into clear, teachable steps. My background in coaching and motor learning helps me understand how individuals develop and improve physical skills at different rates. In addition, I work at a sports summer camp every summer, where I regularly lead and support children in developing athletic and teamwork skills in a fun, structured environment. These experiences, along with my work with diverse student populations, allow me to adapt instruction to meet individual needs and learning styles.
Reading

Reading

I would be a strong reading tutor because I have hands-on experience supporting students’ learning in elementary classrooms as a substitute teacher in Tampa, including many students who are developing their reading skills or learning English as a second language. This experience has helped me understand how to support comprehension, phonics, vocabulary, and fluency at different levels. My education coursework has also given me strategies for scaffolding reading instruction and helping students build confidence as readers. In addition, my experience working with children at a sports summer camp has strengthened my ability to keep students engaged and motivated, which I can apply to making reading activities interactive and enjoyable. I am confident I can make reading fun while helping students grow as confident, independent readers.
Writing

Writing

I would be a strong writing tutor because I have extensive experience both teaching and producing academic writing at a high level. As a substitute teacher in elementary schools in Tampa, I regularly help students develop foundational writing skills such as sentence structure, grammar, and idea organization. In addition, I completed an honors thesis/dissertation at the University of Tampa on nutrition policies in the U.S. versus Europe, which strengthened my ability to conduct research, synthesize information, and write in a clear, structured academic format. My coursework in education has also helped me understand how to scaffold writing instruction for different developmental levels. I am confident I can support students in becoming more confident, organized, and effective writers.
