Hi everyone! My name is Patrick, and I am super excited to be a tutor! I graduated from the University of Virginia with a degree in biology with distinction, a minor in Spanish, and a minor in biomedical engineering. After spending time doing research in a cancer genetics research laboratory, I am now pursing a medical degree (MD). All that to say, I am an avid life-long learner and love being able to break even the most complicated topics down into bite-size pieces that are digestible to everyone! I approach tutoring the same way that I approach studying myself: first, I like to develop a foundation of the material in an engaging way. Over the years, I learned that the best way to understand course material is to make it memorable, so I try to create learning devices that relate specifically to the student's interests. After the foundation is laid, I then solidify the material through as much practice as possible. Seeing questions asked in different ways ensures that the student can apply what they have learned. That said, every situation is unique and I will tailor my sessions to the needs of the individual!
I have prior experience tutoring, especially in the subjects of math and science. During high school, I was able to tutor underclassmen in biology, and throughout my undergraduate career, I had the opportunity tutor others in statistics, organic chemistry, and introductory biology as well. Further, while applying for medical school, I had the opportunity to review essays from my peers who were also applying to various graduate programs and have developed the techniques to tell a compelling story to an admissions committee and, "show, not tell."
My goal as a tutor is to have a positive impact on the students that I work with- I want them to find the same passion in learning that I have. I am easy to reach and will be as flexible as I can be to best meet the goals of my students. Feel free to contact me with any questions or to schedule a lesson!
