I’m an experienced tutor and biology instructor with a master’s degree and 6 years of professional experience. I will help you build strong fundamentals and connect concepts to real-world examples using a student-centered, growth-minded approach: clear goals, targeted practice, active recall, and step-by-step problem solving to build confidence and lasting understanding. Sessions are tailored to your goals, expectations are clear, and progress is tracked so you can see improvement over time. My style is supportive and straightforward—I explain concepts in plain language, then we practice with targeted questions until you can apply the material confidently on your own.

Biology

Biology

I taught 2 semesters of introductory cell & molecular biology and 3 semesters of introductory plant biology. I tutored undergraduate students in biology when I was a senior undergraduate myself. I graduated with a B.S. in Evolutionary Biology in 2006, summa cum laude, and was also awarded Phi Beta Kappa. I worked on two research projects as an undergraduate, for which I received three research grants. During summer of 2011, I worked on a field botany project in Western Australia under the National Science Foundation East Asia & Pacific Summer Institute (EAPSI) fellowship.
Botany

Botany

In the summer of 2011, I successfully completed an East Asia and Pacific Summer Institute (EAPSI) fellowship from the National Science Foundation. I developed a collection strategy for two individuals (minimum) of 22 species of Hakea (Proteaceae), which occur all over the Southwest Australian Floristic Region. This included extensive plant identification in the field, sampling soil and testing for available and total phosphorus. I taught three semesters of Plant Biology to senior undergraduates, in which I led students through laboratory experiments, lectured, tutored students, administered quizzes and graded reports. I also worked on molecular phylogenetics of the lichen species Lobaria silvae-veteris and L. oregana as an undergraduate. Botany is my main field of interest.
Genetics

Genetics

As an undergraduate at University of Connecticut, I took Human Genetics. I also worked on a senior research project extracting and sequencing DNA of lichens, and interpreting the results. As a master's student at Florida State University, I collected 22 species of Hakea in Australia and constructed a phylogeny after sequencing 3 genes from each species. I have a great deal of background in genetics.
Spelling

Spelling

While both my B.A. and M.S. degrees are in Biology, I have done a great deal of writing in both undergraduate and graduate school, as well as critical reading of scientific articles. I've always been kind of a spelling nerd, and would enjoy helping a struggling student to feel more confident in this area.
Zoology

Zoology

I have a M.S. degree in Evolutionary Biology. While I focused in Botany, I spent a year taking Ornithology classes as an undergraduate at University of Connecticut, while working as a tracking assistant for one of the PhD students (I tracked tagged European Starlings using GPS). I then spent a year in my first master's program at San Diego State University working in an Ornithology lab and taking more classes. I have also taken undergraduate Anatomy & Physiology, and basic introductory Biology. I am confident in my ability to tutor this subject.
