Hi! I'm Sam, and I have a master's degree in physics, and I also graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor's degree in physics and math. Hi! I'm Sam, and I have a master's degree in physics, and I also graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor's degree in physics and math. My research has been in computational physics, where I've used Python programming to model neutrino detection events and optimize simulations of supernovae and other astrophysical phenomena.

When it comes to education, I have two years of work experience tutoring college math courses ranging from pre-calculus to differential equations and real analysis. This job also gave me formal training on methods of communicating information effectively and ways of adapting to a variety learning styles and challenges. Beyond that, I also spent a semester as a teaching assistant for a classical mechanics course at the third-year undergraduate level, as well as one and a half years of both creating and editing physics assessment questions at the high school level after that. As such, I have an extensive background in not just tutoring, but in several different stages of the education process as well, granting me a unique perspective that informs my approach to tutoring.

As a student, you might find that a lot of your frustrations lie in the "why" of it all, with unanswered questions like "why does this equation hold?" and "why do I need to know this for my major?" holding you back from excelling nearly as much as you'd like. As your tutor, I will guide you and help you find out the "why" for yourself, whether that means walking you through the derivation of a formula you are struggling with, showing you applications of the material to your particular field of study, or anything in between. In my experience, this sort of approach will you bring you those "aha!" moments where everything suddenly clicks in your mind, which has the potential to improve your enjoyment of and confidence in the subject matter.

So, if you're looking for a well-rounded math/physics tutor with a holistic experience of the teaching process, send me a message!

Approved Subjects

Calculus

Calculus

I received A's throughout the entire Calculus track (including Multivariable Calculus and Differential Equations) and have spent two years tutoring calculus students of all levels. In fact, it was by far the most common subject I tutored! I also excelled in my Partial Differential Equations and Real Analysis courses.
Differential Equations

Differential Equations

I have extensive experience not just with solving Ordinary Differential Equations, but with applying them to real-world contexts via my Physics degree. This also applies to Partial Differential Equations, which are fairly common in Physics as well. I also have experience using computational methods to approximate solutions to ODEs that are tricky or impossible to solve by hand.
Linear Algebra

Linear Algebra

A decent portion of the students during my two years as a math tutor had difficulties understanding linear algebra. Having received A's in both regular linear algebra and the advanced, proof-based version of it, I am adept at helping students build a rigorous, visual understanding of linear algebra. This includes linear operators, matrices, vector spaces, and all other linear algebra-related topics.
Physics

Physics

I got A's and A-'s in every undergraduate and graduate physics course I took. My favorite subjects were Classical Mechanics and Quantum Mechanics due to the rich mathematical background they are built upon. I also did research at both the undergraduate and graduate level where I modeled or simulated various phenomena in physics using Python programming.
Trigonometry

Trigonometry

When tutoring math for two years, I spent a lot of time helping students with their Trigonometry. In particular, I enjoy explaining the theoretical background of trig involving the unit circle. I've also helped students derive and examine trigonometric identities, and I've helped them learn the skills they need to complete calculations involving sine, cosine, and the rest.
