As a writing tutor, I cherish the opportunity to connect with students on both an intellectual and a personal level. In my tutoring sessions, a discussion of a student’s writing is a discussion of the student's interpretations, conceptions, and thought processes. I value the chance to demonstrate to another student that, regardless of the challenges or struggles that they are currently facing, their ideas, their voice, and the unique way in which they approach, process and form an opinion around a topic is valuable and legitimate.
My favorite aspect of being a writing tutor is helping students to clearly and eloquently express these thoughts and ideas, and having my own perceptions challenged in the process. I am humbled that they are willing to share their work with me, especially because writing is so often an intimate and personal endeavor. I believe that the learning component of tutoring sessions is bidirectional: My goal is for students to feel that they learned and grew from out tutoring session, and, at the same time, I have the privilege to be able to learn and grow from those students as well.
I began volunteering as a writing tutor when I was in high school. I also have experience tutoring students with learning disabilities across a range of subjects. Currently, I work as an undergraduate writing tutor at Hamilton College's Nesbitt Johnson Writing Center.
