Hi, I’m Lenore!
I am new to Wyzant—but not to tutoring!

Hi, I’m Lenore!
I am new to Wyzant—but not to tutoring!
I have been a test prep tutor for 15+ years, helping hundreds of students prepare for the PSAT, SAT, and ACT English sections. I have a BA in Spanish Language and Literature from SUNY Binghamton and also love tutoring middle and high school Spanish. Before becoming a tutor, I worked as a magazine editor and writer and as a producer of educational television programming, where I learned how to clearly explain complex ideas. I genuinely care about my students and go above and beyond to help them. I love those lightbulb moments when students finally "get" concepts they once found difficult!
As the mother of a recent college graduate, a current college student, and a high school senior, I understand firsthand what students—and their parents—are going through during the college admissions process, including when a student hopes to attend an elite university. I am always happy to be flexible and accommodating since I know how complicated family schedules can be and how stressful this time already is.
In my tutoring sessions, I use instructional videos, the gamified grammar site Grammarchops, the official College Board question bank, and error logs. I also track student progress by skill area so we can efficiently focus our work. I have taken the official SAT four times since 2022, scoring in the 99th percentile each time. I teach students what kinds of answers to expect, how to eliminate the three incorrect choices, and how to confidently zero in on the correct one. I also draw on my recent test-day experiences to prepare students for what to expect, helping them feel less anxious.
For Spanish tutoring, I use the principles of Comprehensible Input Theory to help students acquire the language naturally.

My background studying language and literature at Binghamton University, then editing and writing magazines and producing educational television at Martha Stewart Living, gives me an eclectic and distinctive skill set. I bring not only a love for and deep expertise in grammar, punctuation, and effective writing but a passion for creating engaging sessions, which turn my students into mini experts themselves, so they can excel on the English section of the ACT. My goal is for my students to be so well prepared for the test that taking it feels almost like a game!

Students often come to me feeling lost, with shaky Spanish language foundations despite years Spanish classes. I work with them to identify and fill in gaps in their basic knowledge, so they can confidently build on their language skills. My goal is to have students acquire Spanish through meaningful communication rather than simply memorizing vocabulary and verb tenses for a quiz or test—only to forget them afterward. I have trained in and incorporate the principles of comprehensible input—hearing or reading Spanish that is understandable but slightly above the learner's current level—into my sessions. Because I mastered Spanish as an adult, I remember clearly which language concepts were confusing to me at first, so I make sure to demystify them for my students—for example, where and why accents fall on certain letters in some words but not others. Once students realize it’s not arbitrary, their pronunciation improves and so, of course, does their spelling, which translates into more confidence and less points subtracted on assessments.
