Hi, I am a PhD student at Stony Brook University. I find it fulfilling to try and pique the interest of students who have struggled with math in the past. Since math has always been a passion of mine, I hope that I can help make it more enjoyable for others.

Hi, I am a PhD student at Stony Brook University. I find it fulfilling to try and pique the interest of students who have struggled with math in the past. Since math has always been a passion of mine, I hope that I can help make it more enjoyable for others.

I have worked in several teaching roles before; Two years ago I worked as a summer school teacher for the charter school network Uncommon Schools, where I taught an Algebra I class for 8th and 9th graders. I also worked as a physics teaching assistant at my university for 2.5 years, where my role was primarily to help students work through the weekly homework and reinforce concepts. I enjoy giving 1-on-1 help with problems, and I can also help prepare students for standardized tests in math and physics. Aside from academics, I am a huge Boston sports fan, and I played ice hockey and lacrosse for most of my childhood. I also love pets and currently have 2 cats at home.

In middle school and high school, I took every honors math class (algebra, geometry, trigonometry, precalculus, calculus). I got a 5 on the AP Calculus BC exam. In college, I took both multivariable and vector calculus, before focusing on more theoretical areas; mainly abstract algebra and topology. I am now specializing in Operations Research as part of a PhD in Applied Mathematics.

I am always open to feedback and hope to find students that I work well with. Please reach out to me if you think I would be a good fit for you!

Very knowledgable and helpful

Thomas is a great tutor! He was very patient and was able to help my daughter with her work and understand the concepts that she didn’t fully grasp from her readings in class! He provided helpful examples and other ways to understand concepts if she didn’t understand the wording. Super helpful and helped her pass the class. Thank you!

Oxana, 9 lessons with Thomas

density functions, probability and discreet distributions, student distributions and chi squared, continuous, poisson, and binomial distributions

Thomas discussed how various distributions work, how the density function works, while using graphs as illustrations of those calculations, such as what the independent variables are and what they imply, and also what the mean or numerical average is and what the implication is of those values etc., in regards to: density functions and probability distributions, such as discreet distributions, student distributions, chi squared distributions, continuous distributions,, poisson distributions, and binomial distributions
