I have a PhD in American history from the University of Rochester and have been teaching and tutoring for over 25 years. I have taught college courses in Introductory Writing, American History, European History, and Political Science in both online and in-class formats. I also have significant experience teaching dual-enrollment classes that are offered to high school students and college students (combined). In sum, I have experience teaching international students, adult learners, traditional-age college students, high school students, and remedial students, in a variety of settings. My teaching philosophy is to meet students at whatever level of preparation they present and to work patiently and steadily (with a sense of enjoyment) to teach the content and skills needed to accomplish our goals.
I also have considerable experience tutoring high school and college students. At the University of Rochester, I was a tutor in the College Writing Program for over 5 years and worked closely with students, many of whom did not have English as a first language, as they crafted proper academic essays in a variety of disciplines. I have tutored local high school students for Advanced Placement courses and Regents Exams (History) and particularly enjoy the focused, one-on-one experience of tutoring with a specific goal in view (an exam, essay, etc.). My tutoring methods mirror my teaching ones – working at a comfortable pace to teach the subject content and the skills needed to use that content successfully (recognizing more important or relevant facts and connecting them to other material). I have won several teaching awards at various institutions and enjoy the process of explaining and clarifying in ways that will work for you.
