Hello! My name is Madison, I just graduated from the State University of New York at Oswego with a Bachelor's of Science degree in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) with a minor in Linguistics. I graduated with a 3.84 GPA, and I am in the process of becoming a certified teacher in NYS.
Throughout my college career, I sought after experiences that I believed would enrich my own understanding of what it is like to acquire a second language. For example, I studied abroad in Da Nang, Vietnam spring semester of 2015 in order to gain an insight of what it would be like to immerse myself in a country where the language and culture are unfamiliar. This experience strengthened my communication skills and increased my global awareness. Back in New York as a third year student, I was selected for part-time work as an English Language Learner (ELL) tutor at Altmar-Parish-Williamstown Elementary School. In this position, I worked with two Swahili-speaking students in different grade levels once a week. I pushed-in to each of their ELA blocks to support them and ultimately prepare them for the New York State English as a Second Language Achievement Test (NYSESLAT). From this, I was able to get hands-on experience as a teacher while learning effective co-teaching strategies that I can later implement in the future. I am ready to take on the role of a tutor with a with a strong commitment to multiculturalism. Furthermore, I am thrilled to learn from each of the students because I appreciate the diversity of knowledge and experiences each student exudes.
In addition to these experiences, I also have a great deal of practicum experience that is required for my degree program. For my first practicum, I was placed at G. Ray Bodley High School, a rural high school in Fulton, New York. In my second placement, I was placed at Kingsford Park Elementary, a suburban elementary school in Oswego, New York. From each of these placements, I actively observed and participated in a total of 50 hours of ESL instruct
