About Matthew

I have experience teaching students of every ability level; I have taught English at private college prep schools as well as schools for at-risk youth who struggle with basic literacy. I am passionate about the study of literature and writing, but I also understand that many are not. Therefore, one of my strengths as a teacher and tutor is making material relatable and being able to answer the question, "Why do I need this?"

I believe that tutoring provides a unique opportunity to reach students in a more profound way than might be possible in the classroom because a tutor's sole job is to work with one student or small group, rather than a large class. Great things can be accomplished in an environment that facilitates that level of focus.

I am a Magna cum laude graduate from Ithaca college and am qualified to teach English at the community college level. I earned a 710 SAT verbal score and 680 SAT writing score.

I can be flexible in terms of scheduling and don't mind tutoring on weekends. 24 hour cancellation notice is required.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I graduated magna cum laude from Ithaca College with a B.A in English, and graduated with a Masters in English Education from Colgate University. I am currently in my third year of teaching English and have taught grades 9-12.

SAT Reading

I have experience teaching at a college prep school that placed a special emphasis on SAT scores, so I am familiar with some strategies to help build vocabulary and take the test itself. I have Master of Arts in Adolescent English Education from Colgate University, graduated magna cum laude from Ithaca College with a B.A in English, and received a 710 out of 800 on my SAT Reading section.

SAT Writing

I received a 680 on my own SAT writing section, took SAT prep courses when I was in high school, and have spent three years teaching English at a college preparatory school that placed an emphasis on SAT prep.

Writing

I graduated Magna Cum Laude with a B.A. in English from Ithaca College; I have a Master's in Adolescent English Education from Colgate University, and have earned enough graduate credits in English Literature to teach at the community college level. I have taught high school English for three years.

The perfect tutor!

Matt worked so well with my son. He is a Junior in high school and really was stressing about an essay he had due. Matt was willing to stay with my son (2.5 hours) until he was comfortable with how to word the essay. I can't thank him enough! Thank you for your patience Matt and your commitment to helping kids succeed!
