Hello, I'm Jae, a native Korean speaker and professor emeritus of English literature at Pusan National University. I taught there for 25 years and have a total of 30 years of university teaching experience in Korea and the United States. I earned my B.A. and Ph.D. in English at the University at Buffalo, SUNY. My teaching experience has primarily been with college students and adults in classroom settings. Working across Korean and English helps me explain language, meaning, and cultural context clearly to English-speaking learners.
I offer individual online Korean lessons for adults, with a focus on upper-beginner to intermediate learners who can read Hangul and write simple Korean words or sentences. We can use Korean movie dialogue, everyday conversation, and short texts to connect vocabulary and grammar with meaningful situations. Together, we can explore pronunciation, sentence patterns, levels of politeness, and cultural nuances. If you enjoy movies, we can discuss characters, relationships, and ideas while practicing expressions you can use in daily life.
Lessons are tailored to your interests, current level, and goals. We will work through manageable examples, practice new expressions in your own sentences, and revisit them in conversation. I can explain difficult points in English when helpful and encourage you to use Korean at a comfortable pace. My goal is to create a patient, supportive learning environment where you can ask questions, make mistakes, and build confidence. Please send me a message through Wyzant to discuss your learning goals.
