I hold a Master’s degree in Education, a Bachelor’s degree in English, and a Level 5 Diploma in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) from i-to-i. I have more than 22 years of teaching experience, including 12 years teaching at the college level, as well as experience teaching secondary-school students and adult English language learners.

Since 2020, I have taught English online to adult learners from a variety of countries and language backgrounds at beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels. Much of this instruction has been one-on-one, which has given me extensive experience assessing an individual learner’s needs and adapting lessons to his or her specific goals, proficiency level, interests, and learning preferences.

My teaching experience includes General English, conversation and speaking skills, grammar, vocabulary, reading, listening, pronunciation, and practical English communication. I also help learners develop the English skills they need for professional and everyday situations.

My approach is student-centered and communicative. I believe that a learner’s goals, experiences, and preferred ways of learning should help shape instruction. I use authentic materials such as articles, videos, photographs, current topics, and real-life situations to make English meaningful and practical. I encourage students to speak and actively use the language rather than simply memorize grammar rules or vocabulary.

I also create a supportive environment where students can make mistakes without embarrassment. Mistakes provide valuable opportunities for learning, and I use them to identify areas that need additional instruction and practice. My goal is to help each student develop not only stronger English skills, but also the confidence to communicate independently in English.

Approved Subjects

ESL/ESOL

ESL/ESOL

I have six years of experience working one-on-one with ESOL students from diverse language and cultural backgrounds. My instruction focuses on developing speaking and pronunciation skills, expanding vocabulary, and strengthening reading and listening comprehension. I also help students understand the variety of regional dialects and accents found across the United States so they can communicate with greater confidence in real-world situations.
Literature

Literature

I taught college-level Introduction to Literature for 12 years, and it was one of the courses I most enjoyed teaching. My students studied a wide range of literary works by Shakespeare, Edgar Allan Poe, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, Louisa May Alcott, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and many other influential authors representing different literary periods and traditions. I helped students develop their skills in close reading, literary analysis, interpretation, and discussion while encouraging them to explore the historical context, themes, symbolism, and ideas that give literature its lasting significance.
Reading

Reading

I taught Intermediate Reading and Basics of Composition courses through New York State’s Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP), helping college students strengthen the foundational skills needed for academic success. In Intermediate Reading, I focused on reading comprehension, vocabulary development, identifying main ideas and supporting details, making inferences, and understanding increasingly complex texts. I helped students develop effective reading strategies that they could apply across their college courses while becoming more confident and independent readers.
TOEFL

TOEFL

My experience teaching English at the college level has provided me with a strong foundation for helping students prepare for the TOEFL. College-level English instruction requires many of the same academic skills assessed on the TOEFL, including reading comprehension, academic vocabulary, critical thinking, essay organization, grammar, and clear written and oral communication. I understand the challenges students face when working with complex texts, developing well-supported ideas, and communicating effectively in an academic environment. This experience allows me to help TOEFL students strengthen not only their test-taking strategies, but also the practical English skills they need to succeed in college and university settings.
Vocabulary

Vocabulary

I have more than 22 years of teaching experience, including 12 years at the college level, where vocabulary development was an important part of my English and literature courses. For the past six years, I have also worked one-on-one with ESOL learners, helping them expand their vocabulary and understand how words are used naturally in context. I teach vocabulary through reading, conversation, word meanings, synonyms, context clues, and practical application, helping students develop a richer vocabulary and greater confidence in their communication skills.
Writing

Writing

I bring extensive experience teaching college-level English and composition, with a strong background in helping students develop the skills necessary for successful academic writing. My teaching experience includes composition courses as well as Intermediate Reading and Basics of Composition through the New York State Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP). I have worked with students on every stage of the writing process, from developing focused thesis statements and organizing ideas to strengthening paragraph development, integrating supporting evidence, revising drafts, and improving grammar, clarity, and academic style. My approach emphasizes critical thinking and helps students become more confident, independent writers who can communicate their ideas clearly and effectively in college-level coursework.
