I'm Dr. Gregory S., an educator with over 20 years of classroom experience spanning high school, community college, and university settings. I hold a PhD in Curriculum & Instruction from the University at Buffalo, an MA in History, a MEd in Educational Leadership, and a BA in English Literature — all with deep roots in social studies, American history, and African American studies.
My teaching career has taken me from urban high schools in Chicago to university classrooms in New York and Missouri. Along the way I've taught everything from standard US History to AP US History, AP US Government, AP World History, AP Human Geography, African American Studies, World History, English, and college writing — at every level from middle school through graduate coursework.
What sets me apart is that I don't just teach history — I research, write, and present on how history is taught. I've published peer-reviewed articles, co-edited a book, edited an AP African American Studies textbook, contributed chapters to Teachers College Press volumes, and written pieces for Education Week. I know the content deeply, and I know how students learn it.
How I Tutor
Whether you're a high school student preparing for an AP exam, a college student working through a history or social studies course, or an adult learner who wants to better understand American and African American history, I meet you where you are. I focus on building real comprehension — not just memorizing dates and facts, but understanding the "why" behind historical events, developing strong analytical writing skills, and learning how to think critically about sources and evidence.
I'm especially strong in: US History, AP US History, AP US Government, AP World History, African American/Black History, Civics, English & Writing, and Social Studies at all secondary levels. If you're looking for a tutor who brings both scholarly depth and real classroom experience, I'd love to work with you.
