I'm Dr. Gregory S., an educator with over 20 years of classroom experience spanning high school, community college, and university settings. I hold a PhD in Curriculum & Instruction from the University at Buffalo, an MA in History, a MEd in Educational Leadership, and a BA in English Literature — all with deep roots in social studies, American history, and African American studies.

My teaching career has taken me from urban high schools in Chicago to university classrooms in New York and Missouri. Along the way I've taught everything from standard US History to AP US History, AP US Government, AP World History, AP Human Geography, African American Studies, World History, English, and college writing — at every level from middle school through graduate coursework.

What sets me apart is that I don't just teach history — I research, write, and present on how history is taught. I've published peer-reviewed articles, co-edited a book, edited an AP African American Studies textbook, contributed chapters to Teachers College Press volumes, and written pieces for Education Week. I know the content deeply, and I know how students learn it.

How I Tutor
Whether you're a high school student preparing for an AP exam, a college student working through a history or social studies course, or an adult learner who wants to better understand American and African American history, I meet you where you are. I focus on building real comprehension — not just memorizing dates and facts, but understanding the "why" behind historical events, developing strong analytical writing skills, and learning how to think critically about sources and evidence.

I'm especially strong in: US History, AP US History, AP US Government, AP World History, African American/Black History, Civics, English & Writing, and Social Studies at all secondary levels. If you're looking for a tutor who brings both scholarly depth and real classroom experience, I'd love to work with you.

Approved Subjects

African American Studies

African American Studies

African American history is my specialty and my life's scholarly work. I have taught dedicated African American Studies and Black History courses at the high school level for nearly two decades, published peer-reviewed research on Black history education, co-edited a forthcoming book on teaching African American history through film, and contributed chapters to multiple Teachers College Press volumes on the subject. I understand both the content and the pedagogy — how to make this history meaningful, rigorous, and accessible for students at any level.
Common Core

Common Core

I have taught and developed curriculum aligned to Common Core standards throughout my career, with particular expertise in the literacy standards for history and social studies. As a district curriculum developer in Chicago Public Schools and Columbia Public Schools, I worked directly on aligning social studies and English content to rigorous standards frameworks. I can help students at any level meet Common Core expectations in reading, writing, and evidence-based argumentation.
Essay Writing

Essay Writing

Strong historical writing is a skill I've taught across every grade level and course I've instructed — from 9th grade US History to graduate-level social studies methods. I taught English and Composition at the high school level, have published academic articles and book chapters myself, and have guided students through everything from five-paragraph essays to AP long-essay and document-based questions. I can help you develop a clear thesis, organize your argument, and write with precision and confidence.
High School Placement Test

High School Placement Test

With over two decades in secondary education across Illinois, Missouri, and New York, I have deep familiarity with what high school placement assessments expect — particularly in history, social studies, reading comprehension, and writing. I can help students build the foundational skills and content knowledge needed to perform confidently on placement exams and transition successfully into high school coursework.
Personal Statements

Personal Statements

As a longtime educator and published writer who has guided students through college application processes, I know what makes a personal statement stand out. I can help you find your authentic voice, structure your narrative effectively, and craft a statement that is clear, compelling, and memorable — whether you're applying to college, graduate school, or a competitive program.
Thesis Writing

Thesis Writing

I completed a doctoral dissertation at the University at Buffalo, have published peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters, and have taught graduate-level courses in education and social studies methods. I understand the full arc of academic argument — from developing a research question and reviewing literature to structuring chapters and writing with scholarly precision. I can support students at the high school, undergraduate, or graduate level with any stage of the thesis or research writing process.
United States History

United States History

I have taught US History at every level for over 20 years — from standard high school courses to AP US History and dual-credit college sections. I've developed curriculum for school districts, contributed to textbook development for McGraw Hill's AP African American Studies course, and hold teaching certifications in both Illinois and Missouri with social studies endorsements. Whether you're preparing for an AP exam, a state test, or just need to strengthen your understanding of American history, I can help you build both content knowledge and analytical skills.
