Hello! I’m Joey C. I graduated from Columbia University in 2021 with a B.A. cum laude in philosophy. For the past four years, I have tutored and taught students in a variety of subjects, including standardized test preparation (both the math and verbal sections of the SAT and the New York City SHSAT); all levels of elementary, middle, and high school math; physics; chemistry; English; ESL; music theory; and history. I have worked with students of many different ages and backgrounds, ranging from New York City middle school students preparing for the entrance exam for specialized high schools, to four- and five-year-old ESL students learning English for the first time, to intellectually curious high school students researching and writing essays for competitions.

More recently, I have primarily worked with middle and high school students. I am a passionate and committed teacher who believes that students learn best when they develop a genuine understanding of the material rather than simply memorize procedures or information. I work closely with each student to understand how they learn and to find the explanations and approaches that work best for them. My goal is not simply to help students arrive at the right answer, but to help them understand why that answer is right and develop the confidence to solve similar problems independently.

I also place a strong emphasis on asking questions and guiding students toward their own answers and interpretations. Whether we are working through a difficult math problem, analyzing a text, or preparing for a standardized test, I want my students to become active and independent thinkers rather than simply relying on my explanations.

One of the most rewarding parts of tutoring is seeing a student's confidence and enthusiasm grow as a subject that once seemed difficult begins to make sense. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or would like to book a session!

I have played the piano since I was seven. In high school and college, I studied jazz and classical music privately and was in a variety of ensembles and bands. I would highly recommend Joseph. He’s extremely patient and our 6 year old boy loves him. He even went above and beyond putting our new piano together. Our son was raving about his piano class and can’t wait for the next one. Thank you Joseph!

Awesome piano tutor

Joseph was great and very patient.Very knowledgeable and very kind. He was very encouraging. He was helping my son with some jazz music that he will be playing for his school. They were working on some chords and some parts of music that he didn't understand, that my son was having trouble reading. My son really enjoyed working with Joseph. You can tell he has a lot of music experience. He is definitely your guy when you need a piano tutor.
