Japanese Tutoring:
Anime, Pop Culture, Fashion, Arts, Traditions - whatever it may be, more and more people are interested in learning the Japanese language.
To learn a language is to learn about the people and how they think and interact, about their culture, and about their history, and Japanese is no exception.
Being a native speaker in both English and Japanese, I have the ability to provide in-depth explanations around specific expressions and idioms, including its social and cultural background and context, thus allowing a deeper understanding of the culture.
Whether it's class homework, a long term goal, or preparing for your visit to Japan, I look forward to working with you!

Sax/ Flute/ Clarinet/ Shakuhachi Instruction:
I am an active musician based in NYC and I have been a music educator for over 25 years, providing private instructions on alto, soprano, tenor, and baritone saxophones, flute, and clarinet, as well as the Japanese shakuhachi. I teach all ages and levels.
Over the years, some of my students became award-winning soloists. Some of them fell in love with jazz music and joined jazz bands. Others took interest in music education. Some of them just enjoy playing their favorite songs at home at their leisure. Whatever the case, music became an important part of their lives, and I'm happy to have contributed to their musical journey.
My philosophy as a teacher is to help students develop their own personal connection to music, allowing them to discover the beauty and the power of music though their own musical journey - Because to me, music is the most magical and powerful healing force in this world, and it is a true joy for me to be able to share this magic with the world.

Knowledgeable and well rounded

I love that Masaru is well versed in multiple woodwind instruments and genres/styles. This helps greatly in providing me the well rounded lessons I was searching for.

Nurturing and Patient - My daughter enjoys her lessons

Masaru is great with my 9-yr old daughter, who has grown a little tired of the more structured, group lessons she attends after school. She loves her weekly private lessons with Masaru and finds him "funny", "nice" and "very helpful". He is very nurturing and patient and is a great Japanese teacher.

Masa is a great tutor! My son immediately clicked with Masa and have been looking forward to his classes ever since. He is much more confident in playing clarinet since started taking lessons with Masa.

Fantastic teacher!

Patient, knowledgeable, concerned for the education and for the person. Could not ask for better! He oriented his lessons to correspond to my son's school lesson plans.

More than a flute teacher

My first lesson far surpassed my expectations. He is not only interested in teaching me the flute, but to fall in love with my instrument. He had me doing things in my first lesson that I did not expect. He believes in me. I look forward to many more lessons to come.

The man!

Great teacher, great guy. Very patient and accessible and great for anybody looking to learn a little something about the flute! Could not recommend highly enough.

Able to look beyond the music.

Masaru helped me to conceptualize a new way of playing the flute. He was very patient as I had a lot of questions. All in all a friendly fun lesson that was just what I needed at that time. I look forward to learning to play by ear with Masaru.

Yes

Masaru helped me with jazz improvisation and technique on playing my saxophone. I really feel like I am making progress and developing as a saxophone player. I also feel like I am achieving my goals on the sax with Masaru as my teacher.

Great experience learning an instrument for the 1st time

Mas is engaging, knowledgable, accommodating and patient. All elements that have made my finally learning how to play the tenor sax an enjoyable experience. Thanks

Motivating and patient teacher

My granddaughter was beginning to lose interest in flute. When she started with Masuru she was a bit reluctant, but his patient approach and willingness to find pieces that were new and interesting to her have revived her interest. He is quite adept at figuring out the needs and approach that will work for his students.
