I have also taught jazz workshops, and participating in various school residency programs. Throughout the years, I've helped students develop deep and personal connection with music. Many of them became award-winning soloists and some have moved on to pursue music in college and beyond.

I have a BA in Music from San Jose State State University, with concentration on Improvised Music Studies. I have received a number of awards, including the Latin Jazz Corner Flautist of the Year Award in 2010. I have also had the privilege of performing in prestigious jazz venues and concert halls around the world including The Fillmore, The Apollo Theater, The Flint Center, and Guggenheim Museum.

I play and teach Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Baritone Saxophones, Flute and Clarinet, as well as Shakuhachi, a traditional Japanese bamboo flute. I incorporate ear training and theory as well, especially for improvisers.

My philosophy as a teacher is to help students develop their own personal connection to music, allowing them to discover and embrace the the magic of music, with pure joy and positivity. I was touched by music at a young age, and it remains to be the most mysterious, and the most magical positive force in my life. It's been truly amazing to be able to share this magic with aspiring musicians!

Knowledgeable and personable instructor

My daughter's have several lessons with Masaru so far, and it's been working out well. We're really happy with our find after being unsure about online lessons. Masaru has provided good tips as well as suggestions related to her instrument. He is personable and responsive to communication. The Wyzant tool is easy to use as well.

Knowledgeable, experienced, and patient teacher

Masaru is a perfect teacher for me. I played clarinet many years ago in high school (classical music) and have not really kept up for 3-4 decades. During COVID-19 pandemic, I’ve had more time and picked up my old clarinet and bought a saxophone to learn jazz. Masaru knows exactly what materials to practice (scales, chords, music theory, ad lib techniques, etc) as well as giving me freedom to choose songs that I enjoy to play. After about 3 months of online lessons, I am learning so many things and enjoy playing jazz and modern songs on both clarinet and saxophone. The Wyzant format is so good for both teacher and student in interacting with videos, sharing PDF files, messages, live sharing of written Information, etc. I give Masaru 5 stars, and would give more stars if more than 5 stars allowed. I am lucky to have him as my music teacher.

Very Personable and Dedicated

Masaru was very quick to get to know me and figure out where I was and where I wanted to go with my flute playing. He was so kind and patient as well. Just in the first lesson, he taught me how to play my flute in ways that I didn't even know were possible! I'm so excited to continue taking lessons with him throguhout the summer.
