Hello Students and Parents,
My name is Eric, and I’m a computer programmer with a chemistry PhD from Columbia University who loves to tutor in my spare time. Over the last 15 years I’ve been a Columbia University teacher, a data scientist at JPMorgan Chase, a designer of quantum chemistry algorithms used by most big pharma companies, and a solar energy and biofuel researcher at NREL, the US government's main lab for renewable energy.

I specialize in helping students achieve their true potential by transforming frustration into “aha” moments in math, science and test prep. I have taught hundreds of students in chemistry and math as a former college and high school teacher.

I know what it’s like having a lot riding on good grades and test scores. I’ve helped many students improve their grades and test scores, just like I did when I was a student. My SAT and GRE scores jumped from the 89th percentile to the 99th percentile after test prep.

I live in Brooklyn and will travel to most neighborhoods in NYC. For fun I ride my bike around the city and teach computer programming classes to musicians and artists at my hacker / maker space in Brooklyn called NYC Resistor.

Chemistry

Chemistry

I have a PhD in chemistry from Columbia University in New York City. I worked as a PhD research scientist in chemistry for over 10 years writing algorithms for computer aided drug design and protein engineering. These programs, which I wrote with a team of PhD researchers, are used at most major pharmaceutical companies, like Pfizer, Merck, Amgen, Novartis, Johnson & Johnson, etc. I also taught chemistry for 4 years at Columbia University to both undergraduates and to high school students in a special advanced program.
Data Science

Data Science

With a Ph.D. and 20+ years as a data scientist in scientific R&D, on Wallstreet, and in schools as a teacher, students love how I help advance their education and careers in data science. Whether you are just starting, switching careers, or striving to master advanced subjects, I can help you. Here is a list of types of students I teach: students in top data science masters programs such as at Berkeley, University of Michigan, Columbia, Carnegie Mellon; students in data science boot camps, such as Galvanize or the Flatiron School; employees in company-sponsored data science boot camps; independent students taking online courses on Coursera or EdX; undergrads in data science classes; professionals in various careers trying to tackle projects for work, or get a leg up next to coworkers with advanced computer programming experience. Why waste your precious time frustrated, when I can explain in minutes what might take you hours to figure out on your own?
Elementary Math

Elementary Math

Some of my students who face challenges in early math have ADD or have strengths in areas other than numbers. Despite challenges, everyone can greatly improve and feel successful with the right guidance and motivation. I provide fun anecdotes and relatable examples so struggling students form the mental connections to succeed. I'm part coach, part motivational expert, and part relatable Wikipedia reference guide for math.

Some of my students who face challenges in science have ADD or have strengths in areas other than quantitative subjects. Other students of mine are already good at math/science and have parents who want to bring their child up to the next level of excellence in science and math by hiring an experience real scientist (me) who has an Ivy League PhD and published research experience. Everyone can greatly improve and feel successful with the right guidance and motivation. I provide fun anecdotes and relatable examples so students form the mental connections to succeed. I'm part coach, part motivational expert, and part relatable Wikipedia reference guide.
Microsoft Excel

Microsoft Excel

Excel is one of the tools I use as a data scientist. I can teach you the best practices and tricks to get the most out of Excel, like vlookup, conditionals, nesting functions, pivot tables, custom macros, etc.

The best tutor I have found

Eric helped my kids with math. He taught my daughter Briony how to divide decimals and he taught my daughter Brandy Algebra 1 for the first session. By the time he left my home my daughters felt confident in doing the work he has helped them with. I thank Eric for everything he has helped my kids accomplish which was self-esteem in doing their work. My children can't wait for him to do their next session...

Very knowledgeable tutor, great at teaching how to code, highly recommended

Eric is a fantastic tutor. I learned a great deal about Python, NumPy and writing efficient algorithms, all of which were invaluable for the courses I am taking, since I did not have extensive experience in writing Python code. The knowledge I gained through these tutoring sessions will be extremely helpful for me in the future, both academically and professionally.

Experienced and patient.

Eric helped me work out some problems with my coding, especially places where I had over written my code. He also helped me with some insights into analyzing the data. He had a very clear way of explaining data analysis which helped me greatly.

Great help!

I was struggling all semester with class. With his help he really got me on track and was really good at explaining things like OOP and linked lists. After having sessions with him I felt a lot more comfortable with the materials in class

Excellent Tutor!

I recently had the opportunity to work with Eric on a marketing analytics project. Eric was a tremendous help for devising a plan for the project and implementing the project with Python. Eric's knowledge of Python is incredible and he taught me some great Python tricks that will enhance my coding abilities going forward. Aside from his structured approach and ability to convey advance topics in a clear, concise manner, Eric also took the time out to read through my lecture notes and watch my professor's lecture on his own time, simply to offer as much help as he could with my project. I'm looking forward to working with Eric in the future for my marketing analytics course!

Above and beyond!!!!

Eric is an incredible tutor who truly went above and beyond to guide me through a project for a job interview. He has a vast knowledge of python and data analysis and was able to guide me through unpacking a massive JSON dataset from an API, unnesting the data into a table, and doing preliminary analysis to gather insights. Eric was extremely knowledgeable and patient and even checked in the morning of my interview for a quick run-through. I highly recommend working with Eric!
