Hi, I am Siobhan. I have a Masters's degree in Social Studies Education from Long Island University Brooklyn and a Bachelor's in History from City University of New York (CUNY) York College. I have 5 + years of experience working with the New York City Departement of Education. A former High School Social Studies Teacher, I taught both U.S. history (9th grade) and Global History (11th grade) and tutored my students in both subjects to help them pass the regents or State exam. My tutoring approach would be to ask students about the areas in which they are lacking and which areas they need to improve.
I will then devise a plan by asking the student how they learn, for example, if the students are visual , auditory, or kinesthetic learners. And then use that to create a lesson using materials and my experiences as a teacher to help them. With regents tutoring, I will use multiple methods to assist you to see which one works best for you. One of my techniques is to identify markers and essential words and phrases then connect them to places, people, and time. I took the regents exam (N.Y. State High School Social Studies Exam) at your age, so I know how difficult it might be for some of you. Document-based questions (DBQs) and essays are usually difficult for some students. I would provide you with additional strategies that I used with my students, and I will show you how to use the process of elimination on the multiple-choice portion to make you feel comfortable doing it.
For other students, I am a firm believer that one on one approach is right for them because they don't feel like the teacher is leaving them out, helping children is my passion, and providing them with additional skills and clarity will help them understand the subject. I feel that having a conversation with my students on a paticular level makes them feel at ease, and it doesn't make them feel uneasy.
