Bio

My tutoring practice is focused on high school entrance exams, particularly the SHSAT. My experience as a classroom teacher in both math and English (both!), as well as my knowledge of these tests, has allowed me to set students on the road to success. SHSAT students of mine have received offers to Stuyvesant, Bronx Science, and Brooklyn Tech.

MY GENERAL APPROACH
I work with students looking for longterm prep, last-minute sessions, or somewhere in between. My goal for each student is to ensure that they master the core math and verbal topics as well as the test-taking strategies that will give them an advantage on the exam. After each lesson, I assign material for the student to work on so as to ensure that the student practices and retains what we covered. I communicate consistently with the parent about their child’s progress, and I make lesson plans and lesson records easily accessible to them as well. I provide each student with a digital dashboard where all the links are posted. The diagnostics I give are self-graded so students get the results and grade analysis immediately. I have a wide array of material for each verbal and math topic. My goal is always to locate students’ weak areas with razor accuracy so as to spend our time optimally.

MY EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND
My dual passion for math and English is reflected in my academic background -- I graduated cum laude with a BA in Mathematics and Philosophy from City University of New York (Baruch College). I started tutoring in college and got my first classroom teaching job shortly after graduating. I've been doing both ever since! I'm passionate about providing 7th and 8th graders with a foundation in quantitative and verbal reasoning that will give them an advantage on the SHSAT and beyond.

Great Tutor!

My son has been taking lessons with Nick and I am very pleased with how things are going. Nick is truly awesome. My son will be taking the 9th grade SHSAT and he is definitely feeling more confident because of the strategies Nick has shown him to help solve the problems as well as all the practice work assigned. Looking for a tutor can be a little overwhelming cause you really don’t know who would be a good fit for your child but I would definitely recommend Nick and will continue to use him in the future if needed.

Very focused tutor with targeted strategies

My 12 year old needed help with the ELA portion of the SHSAT and Nick had some really good strategies and was able to zero in on the problem areas/questions. We will be scheduling more lessons for sure!!

Knowledgeable and reliable

Nick helped my daughter familiarize herself with the THACHS exam. He taught her skills that would potentially be on the test. He provided her with a folder so she can study in her spare time. He was punctual and knowledgeable in the subject areas I plan on having him tutor my daughter for the SHSAT exam also.

Easy-going manner but very targeted instruction.

Excellent first session with clear goals. My daughter found Nick interesting but very clear in his review and instruction. He arrived with a game plan for the session and work in between.

SUPER-KNOWLEDGEABLE, PATIENT, DOWN-TO-EARTH, ON-POINT

I've had a bunch of tutors before but I've never had anyone as knowledgeable as Nick. I needed a quick review of American History and he guided me through the main concepts and details I needed to know. Then he taught me how to write an essay for the American History Regents exam. Since he said he was a math teacher, I randomly asked if he could help me with a trig problem at the end of the session and he said 'sure' and helped me with that too. Really impressed by how much he knows and such a fun guy to work with (great sense of humor btw). I think I learn more in a session with Nick than in 10 months of school. Recommend!
