I'm based in Park Slope, Brooklyn, and I've been tutoring full time for five years. I've been tutoring since I was in high school myself, and I've come back to it again and again because I love learning and working with students. I'm based in Park Slope, Brooklyn, and I've been tutoring full time for five years. I've been tutoring since I was in high school myself, and I've come back to it again and again because I love learning and working with students. In addition to assistant-teaching English, History, and Biology classes in 2018-2019 in a bilingual program in Madrid, Spain, I have individually tutored over 150 students. I work with students studying history (and in particular AP US history, AP world history, and other advanced high school courses), political science, writing, rhetorical and literary analysis, and reading comprehension, pre-algebra, algebra, SHSAT prep, geometry, algebra ll, pre-calculus, SAT and ACT prep.

My students range in age (middle school students to middle-aged adults), and I cover a wide variety of topics. I often teach students how to analyze historical sources and write for history classes; I teach and review beginner, intermediate, and advanced essay skills; I offer college essay assistance and much more. I love when I can show a student what they are capable of achieving and help them develop their own confidence. I also believe that fit matters when it comes to tutoring, and I'm happy to consult over the phone with students or parents before an official lesson.

When it comes to test prep and application essays, the process can be tedious - so I try to keep my students motivated, to make tutoring a positive experience, and to help them build widely applicable skills. I think it's important to get students engaged through challenging activities, value their input, and address their anxieties around learning and grading/scoring.

American History

American History

I majored in Government at Georgetown University and studied history both directly and as an integral part of easily half of the classes I took. I also taught history to students aged 13-16 in a bilingual program where I was an assistant-teacher in Madrid, Spain, during the 2018-2019 school year. My primary duties in that job were technically related to creating and running activities, but I ended up covering or assisting with lessons several times a week as well. I am familiar with games, activities, and strategies which make the study of history interesting and relevant. I also truly believe that skills related to studying history (analyzing sources for intention, truth, bias, legitimacy; connecting various events to see a larger historical theme, etc) are necessary in a world where truth is increasingly difficult to parse out. I can assist students with studying for AP US history, citizenship, or other exams, as well as papers, smaller assignments, and analysis or study skills as they relate to history.
College Counseling

College Counseling

I work with high school and college students on essays of all kinds, for English classes and applications, and my goal is always to teach them transferable writing skills in addition to the academic or application support I provide. I myself was a transfer, so I've been through this process twice, and I know how intimidating it can be. I've worked with about ten students on applications (as of summer 2020), and I focus on improving their ability to write concise, clear, and engaging essays for both applications and in a variety of school subjects.
English

English

I have worked with over 30 high school students on writing, literary analysis, rhetorical analysis, and editing skills. I’ve been tutoring for 10 years and full-time since February 2020.
Government & Politics

Government & Politics

I graduated from Georgetown in 2018 after majoring in government and politics, and I've worked with about 15 college students on government, political science, and/or history papers in the past three years (starting senior year) as a part-time tutor. I help students understand content and concepts for a range of subjects including government and politics, political science, international relations, and political philosophy. I often work with students on written assignments and writing skills, ranging from simple homework to 20-page term papers.
Literature

Literature

I have worked with about 30 students in the past three years on writing skills or paper assignments, and 12 of those have been specifically focused on literary analysis. I often work with students in English classes but I have also created lesson plans, assignments, and rubrics for 6 students to build or sharpen analysis and writing skills. I have worked with both native speakers and non-native speakers on poetry, novels, non-fiction, and a range of other materials.
Political Science

Political Science

I have taken and achieved honors in core political science courses such as Political Science research and methods, Intro to Political Philosophy, Intro to International Relations, Comparative Politics, US Government and Politics, AP US History, etc. I have also taken 8 upper-level political science or related courses, such as Politics of Inequality, Political Sociology, and Terrorism and Insurgency in Africa. While I do not yet have my degree, I am capable of assisting students with work in introductory and mid-level political science courses, and can help with paper-writing or studying for any level undergraduate or high school course.
Study Skills

Study Skills

I’ve worked with over 50 students since the pandemic began, focusing on a wide range of subjects and study techniques. I help my students build confidence and long-term skills, particularly writing and reading skills, and I adapt lessons to their individual learning styles.
World History

World History

I have tutored 6 AP world history students, both for their coursework and to prepare for the exam. I work with students on note-taking and study skills, content, concepts, and writing skills for this course. Last year my students achieved two 3s, two 4s, and two 5s. In addition to tutoring 10 other high school and college students in various regions and time periods of history, I studied history in college and I helped teach history in a bilingual secondary school in Madrid during the 2018-2019 school year.
Writing

Writing

I have tutored about 30 students in the past three years in writing, including middle school, high school, college, and grad students. I work with students on narrowing their focus for papers and essays, organizing their evidence or conducting academic research, creating a thesis, planning a paper, writing the paper, and of course the revision and editing process. I've worked with 8 AP English or history students on their writing, who all achieved passing scores or better (3s, 4s, or 5s). I often teach students of all ages fundamental essay-writing and literary analysis skills, and I have worked with curriculums as well as creating my own.

Wonderful AP History Tutor

Emily was a wonderful AP History Tutor for our 11th grader. She really understands the AP exam; the questions and the AP grading Rubric. She is organized, reliable and knowledgeable. She diligently graded Harry's practice exams, giving him significant feedback. Most impressive was her technique of drilling my son on the different scoring parts of the free response questions. Highly recommend her.

Great Tutor

Emily is a really great tutor. She helped me work on transfer applications and SAT reading and writing. She was super helpful with transfer applications and helped me understand what was most important to include and what the colleges wanted from me. She is also very very knowledgeable about the SAT and taught me a lot of the reasons I was getting certain questions wrong. I got a lot better from those sessions. She is also one of the greatest and kindest people, so she is great to work with.

Excellent teacher!

Emily is a best teacher by any measure. We have tried so many teachers and Emily has certainly been the best. Our son thinks the world of her. Very patient, comprehensive and understanding. Our son has improved tremendously since he took his sessions with her. We are very lucky that she is teaching our son. I can’t recommend her enough.

Knowledgeable and fun to work with

My daughter loves working with Emily. She is a great tutor and started working on my daughter’s weekness areas right away, I could see her confident improving in her first few classes.

Professional and patient

Emily helped me with editing and polishing two application essays for grad school programs. She was very patient and had a lot of great suggestions in how I can improve the essays. I especially appreciate her perspective because I wanted an outsider to read the essays and give a more objective opinion on them. Emily was also very responsive and communicative and was able to give me feedbacks in very short amount of time. I highly recommend her to anyone who is looking for support on their essays! :)

Working with Emily was great. She was very helpful and taught me rules about writing as well. She has definitely helped me become a better writer in such a short period of time!

Helpful and respectful tutor

Emily guided me in taking my paper from rough draft to final version. She was super helpful, and I liked that she focused on developing my ideas rather than introducing her own ideas.
