Hi! My name is Amy and I am a history teacher based in Brooklyn, NY. This is my ninth year as a history educator, and my fifth school year tutoring with Wyzant. What my students love about me: Besides the content expertise, I am invested in getting to know my students as learners. Every lesson begins with a check-in to gauge how we're feeling (and that means generally! not just in school!), followed by an opportunity to review and set goals for the week. I believe so much of our development as learners comes down to our mindsets about our ability to learn, so my approach emphasizes retrieval practice to help students learn how to self-assess their own understandings. My students tell me I often fill in the gaps where their teachers aren't teaching to a high standard. As such, my students gain confidence in their work and come to enjoy studying history and preparing for their exams. While many of my students have earned 4s and 5s on their AP exams, just as many who have earned 3s (and happily!!) have expressed satisfaction with exceeding their own expectations with preparing for these rigorous courses.

Though I am not an AP Government & Politics teacher, I am qualified to tutor as a result of my previous professional experience. For nearly eight years, I was a policy advisor on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. where I gained an immense amount of hands-on experience in Congress, public policy and politics.

I love teaching because I love seeing my students' development as thinkers and writers. I also love the relationships I have built with students, many of which will last a lifetime. I am excited to help you develop your skills and study habits! Hope to hear from you soon.

In graduate school, I specialized in social policy, which meant I took several courses in the sociology department. This includes a small seminar that focused on the corrections system, and other coursework on urban policy problems and economic justice. I also specialized in criminal justice policy as a Capitol Hill aide, including juvenile justice policy and reducing crack cocaine disparities.

Amazing teacher!

Ms. Amy definitely made me feel better about the APUSH exam. It was really helpful to go step-by-step through the process of planning DBQs, and learning important tips like sourcing. I learned how to better condense my ideas and organize efficiently. She’s also very easy to talk to and even helped me revise a DBQ multiple times after our session! She is such an amazing teacher and I am lucky to have her as my tutor. I highly recommend her!

Outstanding History Tutor

Amy is amazing teacher! She is extremely knowledgeable about APUSH and is passionate about helping my kid succeed! My kid was struggling with her DBQ essay for APUSH but she was extremely efficient and my kid understood so much better after her first lesson. She was able to explain and analyze my kid’s essay and even revised the material via email after the lesson to make sure my kid understood. Highly recommend Amy as a tutor. Thank you so much Amy!

AP World History

My 9th grader is in AP World History and has not made much head way in understanding enough to be prepared for the test in May. Her teacher is new and is not an effective teacher. Amy B. is excellent my daughter said she has learned more in an hour then she has all year. She is excited to continue her lessons until the big test. I would highly recommend her.

Awesome AP world history tutor!

Amy helped my daughter to be prepared for DBQ in AP world history exam. Even though my daughter got a good grade in her AP world history class, she was very worried and anxious about her capability in DBQ. However, just two sessions with Amy made my daughter become confident in her ability in DBQ and prepared for the exam. I highly recommend Amy as an AP world history tutor!
