Hi! My name is Amy and I am a veteran history teacher (10 years!) and I live in Brooklyn, New York. Prior to teaching, I spent 8 years on Capitol Hill as a policy advisor. Teaching government comes naturally to me because I actually lived it!

While walking the halls of power was fun, teaching is my passion. I currently teach 9th grade global history and a 12th grade politics at a rigorous independent school in Manhattan. I have taught world and US history at the middle and high school level, and have taught AP World History and AP US History. I've tutored these subjects and AP US Government for 6 years.

What do students love about working with me? I'll let my former tutees say it for themselves: I have a strong command for AP history material; I help students prepare in concrete ways for challenging, on-demand writing tasks; and I help ease student anxiety about exam prep. My students often learn more in their hour with me each week than with their actual teacher. (Feel free to read other student and family feedback to get to know me better!) While many of my students have earned 4s and 5s on their AP exams, just as many who have earned 3s (and happily!!) have expressed satisfaction with exceeding their own expectations with preparing for these rigorous courses.

What else to say? I love teaching because I love seeing my students' development as thinkers and writers. I also love the relationships I have built with students, many of which will last a lifetime. I am excited to help you develop your skills and study habits! Hope to hear from you soon.

In graduate school, I specialized in social policy, which meant I took several courses in the sociology department. This includes a small seminar that focused on the corrections system, and other coursework on urban policy problems and economic justice. I also specialized in criminal justice policy as a Capitol Hill aide, including juvenile justice policy and reducing crack cocaine disparities.

Amazing teacher!

Ms. Amy definitely made me feel better about the APUSH exam. It was really helpful to go step-by-step through the process of planning DBQs, and learning important tips like sourcing. I learned how to better condense my ideas and organize efficiently. She’s also very easy to talk to and even helped me revise a DBQ multiple times after our session! She is such an amazing teacher and I am lucky to have her as my tutor. I highly recommend her!

Outstanding History Tutor

Amy is amazing teacher! She is extremely knowledgeable about APUSH and is passionate about helping my kid succeed! My kid was struggling with her DBQ essay for APUSH but she was extremely efficient and my kid understood so much better after her first lesson. She was able to explain and analyze my kid’s essay and even revised the material via email after the lesson to make sure my kid understood. Highly recommend Amy as a tutor. Thank you so much Amy!

AP World History

My 9th grader is in AP World History and has not made much head way in understanding enough to be prepared for the test in May. Her teacher is new and is not an effective teacher. Amy B. is excellent my daughter said she has learned more in an hour then she has all year. She is excited to continue her lessons until the big test. I would highly recommend her.
