Hi! My name is Amy and I am a history teacher based in Brooklyn, NY. This is my eighth year as a history educator, and my fourth school year tutoring with Wyzant. I have taught world, US, AP World and AP US History. I am certified as special education Highly Qualified in the State of New York. Hi! My name is Amy and I am a history teacher based in Brooklyn, NY. This is my eighth year as a history educator, and my fourth school year tutoring with Wyzant. I have taught world, US, AP World and AP US History. I am certified as special education Highly Qualified in the State of New York. I also participated in an AP World History training in 2015 as part of my development.

What my students love about me: Besides the content expertise, I am invested in getting to know my students as learners. Every lesson begins with a check-in to gauge how we're feeling (and that means generally! not just in school!), followed by an opportunity to review and set goals for the week. I believe so much of our development as learners comes down to our mindsets about our ability to learn, so my approach emphasizes retrieval practice to help students learn how to self-assess their own understandings. My students tell me I often fill in the gaps where their teachers aren't teaching to a high standard. As such, my students gain confidence in their work and come to enjoy studying history and preparing for their exams.

Though I am not an AP Government & Politics teacher, I am qualified to tutor as a result of my previous professional experience. For nearly eight years, I was a policy advisor on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. where I gained an immense amount of hands-on experience in Congress, public policy and politics.

I love teaching because I love seeing my students' development as thinkers and writers. I also love the relationships I have built with students, many of which will last a lifetime. I am excited to help you develop your skills and study habits! Hope to hear from you soon.

I also specialized in criminal justice policy as a Capitol Hill aide, including juvenile justice policy and reducing crack cocaine disparities.

Most of my work centers around determining a central idea with appropriate supporting evidence, analysis related to overall context and theme, and determining point of view/purpose within a text. I aim for students to use context to articulate the most authentic ideas possible, but understand that students need scaffolds and practice to develop strong writing habits as well.

Fosters critical thinking to build confidence for AP World History exam

Our 15 y.o. daughter enjoyed Amy's style right away. Amy demonstrated a knowledgeable command of the material and takes a wonderful teaching approach that fosters critical thinking skills. After her first video class with Amy, our daughter feels more confident to follow a plan to prepare for the AP World History exam.
