I am a Columbia University graduate and an experienced former college counselor and essay writing coach. I have worked as an educator in the New York City DOE/charter system for 8 years. I have experience as a tutor in standardized testing including the SAT, SHSAT, SSAT, SHSAT, and ISEE, and have also taught students of all ages, from elementary - high school. My students have been accepted to institutions such as Andover, Choate, the Trinity School, Fieldston, Yale, UPenn, Columbia, Wesleyan, Vassar, Williams, and more.

I also hold a Master's Degree in Drama Therapy from New York University, and am a practicing mental health counselor. I specialize in working with students with neurodiversity and learning disabilities.

I have three years of experience in tutoring the ACT at NYC premiere tutoring agencies. Reading is my specialty and favorite subject to teach, with proven methods to beat the test and an attention and compassion to the specific needs of each of my students. My past students have an average of 4-5 point increases in the ACT Reading section.

I received a B.A. in Anthropology at Columbia University and have 4 years of research experience in the subject including multiple academic papers. I specialized in American Studies, Religion, and Human Rights within the field, and am completed my own ethnography and field work as well as in-depth analyses of ethnographic writings.

Upon graduation, I have worked as a tutor for top testing companies in New York City, and among my various subjects I have tutored Common Core to a number of students in 4-7th grades both privately and in a classroom setting. I have created my own lesson plans from New York State Common Core materials in Reading, Writing, and Mathematics. In Reading, I have a proven method of teaching students to summarize the passage as they read, and then finding proof in the passage to answer each questions. In Mathematics, I work meticulously through each student's personalized content gaps.

I have helped students raise their scores on both the lower and upper level ISEE by a targeted approach in eliminating bad answer choices, truly understanding the root of the reading comprehension section, and mastering the verbal section. I have expertise tutoring the SSAT and it is my favorite test to tutor. I have worked at premiere testing companies tutoring the SSAT to students in New York City, West Chester, and Connecticut, and my students have raised their scores over 40 percentile points and have been admitted to top boarding schools. I have personalized my proven methods to each of my students to make taking the SSAT simple and fun, with the difficult reading comprehension and analogy sections being my favorite sections to teach. Great with kids and very patient.

Devin understands how to speak to kids. She explains who she is, allows quick breaks, allows my son to work on items on his own, but also checks in to be sure he is focused on the task at hand. She is flexible with time, easy to reach, responsive, and connects with my son.

Excellent tutor

Devon is wonderful. She is always prompt and extremely pleasant and polite. My daughter has ADHD and language and auditory processing delays. Despite going to a specialized school for children with learning disabilities, she was falling behind and extremely disorganized. Devon has helped my daughter tremendously in a short time. My daughter really likes her and responds to her because of her kind yet firm manner. She has helped her get organized and given her many tools for success with her homework. Highly recommend!!
