About Andy

I try to forge a deep understanding of my students' thinking. For me the most important lesson learned from taking a standardized test is becoming more aware about your own thinking. I'll help you get the most out of your strengths as a test-taker, and develop a better understanding of your own cognitive patterns and habits at the same time. I also have a healthy respect for the amount of pressure that test-taking places on students' shoulders. As such, I do my best to make my sessions as engaging as possible, and only assign homework that is absolutely necessary to reinforce in-session learning. No busy work allowed.

I have taught and tutoring the SAT and ACT for over fifteen years. I worked as a teacher and tutor for the Princeton Review, tutored Latin and Math at the Trinity Middle School, and currently teach an SAT class at Groundwork for Success (an after-school program) in East New York.

Although I excelled in math as a student (780 SAT score), it was never my favorite subject. As a teacher and tutor though, I find math the most rewarding subject to teach students, and I particularly love working with math-phobes. I tutor ACT Math, SAT Math, NYS Regents exams, and all math topics up to pre-calculus.

As an undergraduate, I studied classical theater and Speech at Northwestern, so language is something that I really enjoy in all its forms. I'm also an avid reader of newspapers, fiction, and non-fiction. I've been teaching SAT/ACT Reading and Writing for years, and many of my students have noticed that, as a result of their work preparing for these tests, they now write with greater confidence and command.

The middle school entrance exams (ISEE/SSAT/SHSAT) provide an introduction to the world of standardized testing, and I have taught and tutored these exams for over ten years. I have found it can be a delicate process to balance schoolwork and the rigors of test prep with younger students. For me, open communication with parents and students about expectations for the test makes all the difference in effectively preparing for these tests while still maintaining a healthy school/life balance for these young adults.

I have general availability for tutoring during weekdays from 10AM-9PM . I am happy to meet in your home or online for a discounted rate, contact me for details. I look forward to helping you close in on your academic goals!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I have tutored over ten students on ACT English in the past four years, including just finishing up two tutorials for the September test date.
