About Jeffrey

My name is Jeff and I am a full-time professional science tutor with a passion for teaching and a track record of helping students raise their grades, improve their self-confidence, and enjoy subjects they once hated. I have worked as a tutor since high school, tutoring my friends in return for chicken sandwiches. Unfortunately, I cannot pay my rent in chicken sandwiches, but if I could, that would still be my rate.

I attended college at the University of Virginia where I worked as a tutor for the Athletic Department and helped student athletes improve their grades and study habits. I then completed a Post-Baccalaureate program in order to complete all of my pre-med coursework. During my post-bacc, I tutored college students in Bio, Orgo, and Physics. I finished my post-bacc with a 4.0 GPA and scored in the 95th percentile on my MCAT. During the summer after my first year in medical school, I worked as a Gross Anatomy teaching assistant and instructed both Physical Therapy and Physician Assistant students in the fundamentals of Gross Anatomy. This was an amazing experience and it taught me that my true love will always be teaching others and helping them achieve their goals, no matter how daunting they may seem.

I tutor Biology, General Chemistry, Physics, Organic Chemistry, Anatomy and Physiology at all levels from middle school, to high school, to AP and IB, to college level. Additionally, I can help with MCAT review and walk you through the medical school application process (i.e. work out a timeline, help brainstorm essay topics, etc.)

My tutoring philosophy is to present the material in a way that the student can easily relate to. If a student likes formulas, we will describe phenomena using formulas. If a student prefers learning visually with drawings and diagrams, then I will employ those. I will literally do anything possible and will present the material as many ways as necessary until it sticks in the student's mind.

I am also a coach. In hiring me, I will be your biggest supporter. I will bring a positivity to the experience and prove to you that you can learn anything, as long as the material is presented in the right way and you are willing to put in the work. I am extremely patient and will never make you feel down or embarrassed about your current level of knowledge, it is all about where we will end up when we are done (i.e. with a great grade/score you are satisfied with).

If you think I may be the right tutor for you, then please contact me. Thanks, and I look forward to working with you.

Best,
Jeff

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Anatomy

In addition to doing well in Gross Anatomy during my first year of medical school, I also spent last summer working as a Gross Anatomy tutor, helping teach a cohort of Physician Assistant students and Physical Therapy students. I love the material and have come up with tons of systems and mnemonics to help students master this enormous amount of material. If you find yourself struggling in this subject, I would love to work with you so you can accomplish your goals.

Biology

I have extensive experience tutoring Biology at both the undergraduate and high school level. During my post baccalaureate course work, I received the third highest grade in my Biology course out of a class of roughly 400 students. Additionally, I received a 5 on my AP Biology exam (the highest grade possible) in high school. As a medical student, I have taken several additional courses that touch on different aspects of Biology (e.g. Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, and Microbiology). These courses have deepened my understanding of Biological mechanisms and I take great pride in making these concepts interesting to my students. Studying biology can be a dull experience, or it can be fun and illuminating.

Chemistry

I took two semesters of General Chemistry during my Post-Bacc program and attained a grade of A+ in both. General chemistry is a subject where a tutor can make all the difference. With the proper instruction, difficult concepts become easy and the math problems can actually be, dare I say it, enjoyable.

MCAT

I completed a post-baccalaureate program at Hunter College, where I received a GPA of 4.0 after having completed all the pre-requisite courses that are tested by the MCAT. This includes non-calculus Physics, General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, and Biology. I have tutored Hunter students in Biology, Physics, and Organic Chemistry. I took the MCAT exam in 2011 and received a composite score of 35. My two years spent in Medical School at SUNY Downstate College of Medicine have also strengthened my understanding of many of the ideas tested by the exam.

Organic Chemistry

I completed two semesters of Organic + Lab Chemistry at Hunter College, and achieved an A for both semesters. I have also taught elements of Organic Chemistry to students at Hunter College. I also took the MCAT, an exam with an Organic Chemistry component, and received a cumulative score of 35.

Physics

I received a A in both my Physics 1 and Physics 2 courses. I have been tutoring physics for several years and enjoy simplifying these difficult concepts.

Best tutoring experience I've had by far

I was extremely lucky to have Jeff as my tutor for Organic Chemistry I this past semester. Long story short, Orgo was a nightmare the first time around so I had to retake it. I decided to get a tutor and eventually reached out to Jeff. My first impression was that Jeff was very professional, yet laid-back and easy to talk to. He was very eager to help me reach my goals and showed willingness to
